So that tells me it's obviously right near Iran. Now, I think this actually is close enough that that's such a dark red that it might be next to Iran, but I can't remember if that's like the adjacent or the second. I don't think, I think it's not quite adjacent. So now the question is, is it on this side or this side? I think if it's on this side, it would be two, these two colors would be more similar, right? So I'm gonna say it's west or southwest. I guess there could be northwest, but let's try Egypt. Okay, so that was a bad guess. So it's got to be like Northwest. Okay, so now I'm going to say Armenia. Okay, that was a really, really bad guess. So it's interesting. It's farther from Armenia and Egypt are both farther. But I'm a little confused because I guess it must be down here. For people who are new. Which is that I am writing a book. It's like the story of everything. I don't know if that'll be the title or not, but it literally covers everything. We started the Big Bang, we ended the end of the universe. And I, ooh, this is grim. I mean, if your car breaks down, like, you just die, right? There's obviously no service here. This is when you need satellite service, because, like, this is just, this is just, like, this is the end for you. So yeah, it's a book and I'm in the middle of the third stage, which the first stage was two years of writing the first draft, which was about as big a project as I've ever taken on in terms of like trying to write about everything. Every single thing needs research because I'm not an expert on anything. I know something, I know more about some things than others, but everything needed research and some things needed like full learning. So I wrote that. And then I... We're not... That's too distracting. I can't have a human voice when I'm trying to... So, anyway. Six months to get from V1 to V2. V2 was 50,000 words shorter than V1. And... Which is about a book. I cut a book out of a book. It went from like 255,000 words to 205. Then... I had to say, okay, before I do the final revision to get it down to, I don't know, 165, 175, I need to do all the drawings now. Because, you know, you need the drawings in there to see what the chapter really is that you wrote. You can't really see that without, without, music's a little loud for me. So like you don't want to do the drawings right after the first draft because you might cut out huge sections that you've already done drawings for right and then you're not gonna want to cut them out because you already did the drawing and it's bad incentives So you need to get the first major revision done the big one Then you need to do drawings before the last revision even though you might still cut out a drawing or two because Again, you can't really do the final revision without the drawings make the whole thing come together It brings the whole chapter to life and now you're like, okay I see where we are here and I get the feel for the chapter So you need that Then you did a final revision and then you're kind of done I'll probably do one little polish revision after that send it out to some friends and experts for you know because it's a bug it's not a blog post so we got one extra level of Thoroughness, but then Then I'm done then I'm out and it takes months and months for a random house to publish it at which point I can start doing blog posts again And boy do I have a big list of blog posts to do so anyway, we're in the middle of drawings right now There were 300 plus drawings We decided to try something new and hired an illustrator, like a real illustrator, not a fake illustrator like me, to do things that don't really, that wait, but why style doesn't benefit the reader. So like maps, let's just get a really good maps, right? We don't need like my cartoony maps. Let's get maps that look really, really like clear and good or certain really complex diagrams. Like if I want like a really good steam engine diagram, like a really good thorough one. or like an integrated circuit and show me the integrated circuit, right? It's like, I can do that, but it'll be better if someone else does it. Like most drawings I'm still doing, right? Or like, you know, graphs, lots of, you know, there's lots of line graphs. Like, can we get someone who's better than me at line graphs to do them? So anyway, that cuts out maybe a third. And then the other two thirds, 200 or so drawings are me. Now I've done about 150 of the 200. which means I'm in crunch time because I need to finish this by the end of this month. Of course I was hoping drawings would be quicker than end of April but end of April is the bare minimum for lateness, the maximum for lateness because I need to get to V3 and I need to have this done by the end of the summer. It has to be done by the end of the summer so that it can come out in the fall of 27 because they take a full year on their end and we can't delay this anymore. So that's where we are. And we're live streaming drawings today because honestly, two reasons. One, it's fun. Connect with readers. Get to hang out with readers. You know, I feel like when I'm writing blog posts, there's a lot of hanging out with readers just via comment sections and, you know. And when I'm not doing blog posts, there's like X, but you know, a lot of you aren't on X and like, I don't know. It's not really the best place to hang out with readers. So this is a way to catch up and to just, you guys can see what I'm working on. And you can get a sneak preview of this book that hopefully will be a book you like down the road. And the second reason is that it's genuinely productive. I end up doing a ton because like right now, yes, we're procrastinating, but like the procrastination windows are so much shorter than they would be with for me. if I were alone and the drawing windows are longer and instead of like being like, ugh, I'm beat, like in the afternoon, I'm like, nope, people are here, let's keep going. So I end up having these huge days. So that's where we are. That's the purpose. Now let me go quickly check Slack to see if Alicia has been screaming at me about something that I'm doing badly here. Is that, yeah, it's like, not as big as Madison Square Garden, but it's a big-ass cube. But it's all the gold that's ever been mined. Like, you know, think about like Fort Knox. You picture all these like big gold blocks. Every golden ring, every whatever that's ever been mined. So, 8.6 trillion. So yeah, some old wait but why post. That's probably pretty dated now. It's called like, what would you do with 274 trillion or something? Because that was all the wealth in the world at the time. I bet you the numbers have changed a lot. But the concept still holds. So we have a ton of drawings that I'm trying to get through in these three days, three big days. Try to visit at least once each day so you can see what's happening. I'm trying to do, I've got like 28 drawings that I think would be fun live stream drawings and maybe another 15 that aren't that I'll do after. But if those 15 can go in a few days. So if I can get through a big chunk of the 28 in these three days, that would be huge. 28 is super ambitious since some of them might take a half day. Some of them are long, some of them are easy. We'll start with an easy one right now. But if I can get through 20 of them or 18, I mean, that's huge. Just knocking out such a big chunk. And then we're like, then we're like a week or two big weeks away from like done, done, done with drawings and like onto the next thing. So here's what we're doing. We're going to start with an easy one and then we'll do a harder one. The easy one I want to start with is, okay. that's when i do when i when that when the windows go like that is because i'm using my corners i go to the corner so i can like see all the things on the screen at once uh okay let's just open graphics i'm going down to there is a drawing where i started to do it and then i don't like how i did it so i'm doing it differently um let's just start here first of all so this one is going to be called um soe templates we're going to do um what's it called the stevenson stevenson Now, my question for you is, I'm going to do a little trivia here. I'm going to do it over here so you can't see. Okay, that's what I thought. All right, so if, let me just pull a sun out here because I've got a sun. Here's another drawing I've done. Where is it? This is some relative stuff here, right? So we've got the earth. If the earth is a one millimeter ball, right? Picture like rolling that around in your fingers, you know, a really tiny little bead. Too tiny for like a necklace, right? Like maybe a really, really thin bracelet, but basically it's like a grain of sand. a little round green and that's the whole earth like if you took a magnifying glass you'd be like oh my god yeah there's like Africa there's like the Pacific you can see it like really really tiny that's the whole earth Jupiter is the size of like a marble about a centimeter and the sun is like big right like damn like the little picture like you know the sun's here and then about so the good rule of thumb is this earth is about a hundred sun diameters away from the sun so the sun here is about I don't know 11 centimeters something like that um so it's like a big grapefruit really uh more of like a small melon so a picture holding like a cantaloupe and now 100 cantaloupes away so that's about I don't know 30 40 feet away 10 meters or so um you have a grain of sand that's the earth that's like how like I you know the planets are such a small amount of the mass of the solar system the sun is like this big dense thing right and then um and by the way it is dense the average density of the sun i do remember it's in the book but is it's really dense it's like uh it's like um a i think it's like a cubic like a cubic foot something you know like a i don't know like a box it weighs like uh weighs like a ton like really really heavy i think i might be now i might be getting that wrong Should we look that up? No, we're getting too far off. We're getting too many diversions. We can get like one diversion off, which is what we're doing. We can't go two diversions right now. The sun is dense. Anyway, then like the planets, Jupiter's the big one. It's like a little airy little marble, which is like 150 meters away from this. So it's like a football field and a half away is this little marble. And that's the big planet. Like Uranus and Neptune are blueberries. And Earth is nothing. The rocky planets are like, the rocky planets are so unimportant to the sun. It's like these actual sand grains like 50 feet away going around like irrelevant. That's where we are right now. We're standing our giant Earth, the big world, the whole world, the Earth. You think of it as so big. It's nothing. It's a little grain of sand floating. And we're on it right now. We're on that thing. What are we doing here? it's weird so this this is also this book just like causes me existential crises every turn every turn we go to the past we go to the future we go to the near term future the near term past the far past of the far future it's just uh it's a lot to think about okay what are we doing here we go taking this we're copying it and we're bringing it over here why why does it do this you see how this does not have a big glowing orb it just looks normal and now i paste it here and look what we have I want to quiz you first. Now Illustrator, to be clear, I'm not, I'm new at, so I always use Pixelmator before, which is, Pixelmator is really great. It's like a Photoshop type thing. It's really great for drawing like art, like pixel art, whatever, like Microsoft Paint, but the fancy version. And it turns out that that's not what I, needed because I didn't I always thought that's what I was always using I was very stubborn and then I need to try to Illustrator because Random House you know or any real book you kind of want like vector drawings which means it's like perfect resolution but it's also harder to work with a certain ways and so I was very stubborn and the learning curve is very steep with with with Illustrator because it's just really not intuitive if you're used to the other kind but now I will say I've become a real convert because It's just I can like manipulate what I've done. I can go and like fix it. I can just work with it It's like much the lines I draw are like objects. I can then go and work work with work with later. So I Do like it. I will say okay now I want this to go. No, no, no, just the outer edge Whatever Okay, so now we're gonna open this a little bit and this is this is the janky way This is the kind of I do a lot of hacking my my way through things And this is my hack to get rid of that orb. When I know a real illustrator person would have some really quick way to do it. But you know what? It worked. And now I'm going to group this together with this. And now this is one object. And now it's as if it's... Oh, nope, nope. Group it together. Oh, I have to highlight this. Okay. Group it together. Now it's as if that orb isn't there. You see? I get by. Now my question for you is, if this is the sun, let's make it much smaller. how big is the biggest known star stevenson in fact i don't know why i dragged that in it's so small i should just do a uh in fact i'm just gonna do that sorry after all that i'm just gonna do this because it's too small anyway uh i think like a yellowy orange right like uh something like this yeah let's just do that this is i don't know why i don't need the full fancy sun from the other drawing all right um so if this is the sun maybe a little yellower tiny bit yellower so here i can go to my colors and i can like make it yellow where you see can't be too yellow because look yellow you can't see see that's really yellow you can't in a page it's just too too light yellow over white so you gotta you always have to either do some darker yellow sometimes i darken it and sometimes i add some red in you know or some green in so you can read so if you have yellow you can add some green some orange some red you know then you get like a slight you know not slight off yellow, but they're darker colors, or you can just darken it. So like here, let me show you. So I'll show you text because text is really hard. So text, text in yellow. Okay. And let's make it a little bigger. I'll just zoom in. Okay. So now check out how not workable this is, right? You can't do that. You just can't. People can't see it. Especially on certain backgrounds or whatever. um so what you can do is you go here and the you can always go here and drink a little darker yellow that's what i'd often do you know it's not the prettiest color but like it works and it gets the point across because sometimes i'm trying to use a lot of colors to identify different things so if i have like a bunch of different colors and i need something to be yellow um i do want to i can show you an example i have so many different drawings that i've done with so many different colors uh let me find something i've done recently Okay, Drake equation. Now, you remember the Drake equation? Do we remember this? From, oh, actually, I didn't end up using yellow here. Okay, I didn't use yellow here, but this is the Fermi Paradox Drake equation. I was deciding here, I put twice, because I'm like, do I use the black lines, or do I do the lines in the same color as the fic? That's the kind of shit I like, just can't decide. So, these are like my illustrator. I can just make another artboard over here, do both, and then like, talk to Alicia. later get feedback and you know what do you think and we'll just make a decision anyway this is the the drake equation that's a we use the fermi paradox people use for how many to estimate how many intelligent civilizations communicating civilizations there might be out there and i didn't use yellow so it's not a good example because i i this would be often yellow but i ended up doing like an orangey yellow um i don't know there'll be examples will come up right we don't need to Okay, here's one. Fine. I'm going to show off something I just worked on forever. Look at this shit. Look at this shit. Do you know how long this took me? Now, you might say, oh, I've seen that online somewhere. I've seen infographics showing this. This is the evolution of the alphabet. But the problem is all those infographics, first of all, most of them don't include the Egyptian level at the top, which is, I think, the most interesting part. So I had to research all that. And they're all different. And I don't think any of them will research that well. They're all different. Like, for example, There is, so the evolution of the letter, where are we here? Okay, D. So D, this is like a door, right? This is, I don't know why, but this is a door in Egyptian hieroglyphs. So door then, basically things got simply, the Proto-Sinaitics, which were like Canaanite type people from a long time ago, living in Egypt, they didn't speak Egyptian. or like they but they but basically they wanted to create their own a way to do sounds in their own language and they were like let's just pick Egyptian hieroglyphs that start with that sound so like the this would start with a duh and so they're like let's just use that symbol for the sound the sound duh not actually to say door But also let's like simplify so they're easier to write and that became the first alphabet and then the Phoenicians famously adopted it and then they spread it So it's obviously often associated with the Phoenicians. I don't know what you call it. It's used all over the world, so it's not like any countries. So I'm showing that progression. So this is archaic Greek, which is the ancestor of our alphabet. And now Romans, they just have basically the same exact thing, but in their font, except they don't have a U and a W and an I. And now you get to modern, and that's us, right? So you can just see. You can see how it formed. Look at the A. You're like, oh, the A comes from this thing. Oh, wait. Oh, shit. The A is just an ox head upside down. Who knew? These are ox horns at the bottom. And this triangle at the top is like an ox head. So you don't realize that you're doing this when you're doing it, that you're writing an ox head all the time. Why are we here? This is an example where I need yellow. right i need so many colors colors or information i prefer not to have a full rainbow i don't want every every drawing to be a rainbow right i like to pick you know greens and blues or maybe a red and a and a a yellow but i will usually try to i'd even get to i'd use gray here i used gray for the the original symbols that were used by the these early alphabets that didn't make it to today That's the kind of thing that maybe I'll revise out. It's... the the our direct ancestors basically and then maybe one branch off for each area that's not that to show what they are we'll do that this week sometime but we're not doing it now but i wanted to first get your read on something which is i'm trying something out with eyes um i'm trying out googly eyes and so i've done these are all animals i've drawn um all traced from the pictures of real animals because I'm not able to do this without doing that. And I'm trying out some different eyes, if you might notice. Now, this guy, right, these guys here are just typical Wink-B-Wai eyes. I think animals might, for this book, maybe we spruce them up a little bit. Now, I think the zany, the full zany eyes is a bit much. Although I do have some drawings where actually I think it works. Like there's a giant chicken from hell called the Enzu. It's actually called the chicken from hell. It's a dinosaur that will just just obliterate you obliterate you but it's basically a big chicken but it's a nightmare. We are on the rodent side of things. So you have the majestic animals are like our cousins and our siblings are like rodents. Then primates and rodents are very close, right? My idea is that I want like a tray or something that shows the future people. In the 99% of the time down there, you get to the last 1%, last two-thirds of the 1%, you have AD. More than half of all Homo sapiens have lived in AD. More people have lived in AD than in BC. That's how much the population has gone up. There was almost no one here. For most of human history, there was like, I don't know, a few tens of 30,000 Homo sapiens, 40,000 Homo sapiens, like maybe 100. Like the population of East Village, New York today was... All of our ancestors on Earth were all descended from that group of people. Stayed pretty small for a long time too. Okay, so now how the hell are we going to do this? And that is a baby. By 1 AD, only 55 billion estimated humans had ever lived. The 8.3 billion people alive right now, is roughly the same as the total number of people that lived during the first 270,000 years of humanity's 320,000-year lifespan. It took that long, more than a quarter million years of Homo sapiens, for the amount of humans to have lived life that are currently alive today. And by the way, their lifespans were shorter. So if we just go by hours, total life experience lived, you probably get pretty close to the first 300,000 of 320, maybe even more. You might even get like to the last 10,000 years before you have the amount of hours that are experienced by people on earth today, experienced in total by all people that had ever lived. And Central Asia, this is why I did a trip once to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan because I was like, what the hell is going on in those stands? I need to go. And I think what we're going to draw is that let's just call it that tavern, tavern coffee. And I'll explain what I mean. We're about to get the pen. And we're going to... I haven't used the pen yet today. This is a whole different set of non-skills. So there's the Illustrator non-skills that I have, and then there's the Drawing non-skills. So now we're going to do some drawing with this tablet. This is my Wacom. It's brand new. It's their new kind Intuos Pro. It's razor thin. Fits right in your bag. You know they have fancier ones that have you can actually see it hooks up to your screen You can actually see it's like it is an iPad basically screen you can look down and drop I just I really wasn't using that when I have one but I wasn't using it and as this clunky and has all these wires This is wireless Bluetooth. I love it. Wacom does makes really good products You can you know use all these two I can program these so instead of it I can just if I want to do undo, you know, switch to brush switch to eraser switch to whatever I can just have these programmed The reason I haven't done it is because I just put my mouse and keyboard right here and I'm just so used to having my left hand on those. I can very instantly just, you know, I'm very quick. So I feel like I'm getting what I need, which is you need, you don't want to be using your mouse to go up to select, you know, you want to be able to keyboard shortcuts, but I'm doing that. You know, Wacom also sells like a little remote control thing in your hand that has all these buttons and you can basically hold it in your left hand and in your lap and just like change that. change the tool and you also have these buttons here on the actual pen which so there's lots of ways um i'm probably not fully optimized using the keyboard but it works for me um and i have the mouse right there which is nice so let's turn this on and let's open something up first i want to open up a uh the doc i want to open up the word doc of the part of the book where i am about to i want to i always want to refresh myself on what's what i'm saying um in the book at this moment where the drawing happened so I can really be drawing the exact right thing. Plus I can tell you so you can also see. Okay, so let's say coffee. So I start the section on the Enlightenment. Now we're in chapter six. We've gone from the Big Bang through all of the formation of the Earth, through all of evolution, through all of... ancient, you know, homo hominin history through ancient human history to more modern human history to medieval eventually we get to the most modern human history in this chapter six last 500 years and about halfway through that point I get to the Enlightenment and I start the Enlightenment section with a description of the first coffee in Europe and it turns out that coffee was you know, originated, we think, in northern Africa, northeast Africa. It's basically like an exotic African drink that now seems so unexotic because we all have it, but like it's just been adopted, but it is like an exotic Ethiopian drink. It then hopped the Red Sea to Yemen. We think maybe it originated in Yemen, but it was in Yemen very early. And then it spread through the Middle East because everyone was like, holy shit, this is good. And it wakes me up. What a great thing. It's amazing, by the way, that you go all the way to like, you know, 1600 Europe, the year 1600, and no one was having coffee in the morning. They were just waking up and raw-dogging it, trying to have some kind of energy in the morning. It's crazy to me. They didn't have tea either. Did you know this? And here's the craziest fact that I figured out. Well, I read it. It was the 1660s in Europe that both coffee got brought to Europe. for the first time. 1650s, the 1650s, in that same decade, tea first got introduced to England. So England. England got coffee and tea, coffee from the Middle East and tea from China via Dutch traders in the 1650s. So 1650, you go back to England, you say, hey, I want some coffee. Everyone looks at you blankly. I want some tea, blankly. 1660, you go like, yeah, sure, what kind? Either one. Pretty crazy given how much I associate coffee with Europe how much I associate tea with England, but England is brand new with tea Just China and then Japan had it a long time ago. They stole it from China India, you know So anyway, I tell the story It was a British merchant was traveling through the Ottoman Empire in the in the 1650s and he took his Armenian servant Pasqua Rosé with him while he was there rose was you know i assumed that the merchant was in meetings and rose was kind of dicking around killing some time and he was like wait a second what's this black drink you're having and he tried something he's like oh wow this is good i'm gonna bring it back to london he opened london's first coffee house in 1652 and until then alcohol had just been the thing it was like water and alcohol and alcohol by necessity sometimes because it killed you know parasites fermenting it. So, and alcohol makes people dumb. So you have the best minds, you know, in Europe and they're sitting around saloons, or I guess that's an American, taverns, whatever, getting drunk, having dumb conversation. And now coffee shops open, it becomes a hit, becomes a new thing. Suddenly, people aren't just drinking there, they're getting hyped up and they're talking to each other and then suddenly they have all this stuff to talk about. And now there's more and more opening and it's kind of, and it becomes the hit place to spend time. Intellectuals, artists. And instead of having dumb, drunk conversations, they're now debating. And this, you know, I'm sure it was more complicated than this, but this at least is the lore. This is what a big part of why the enlightenment happened then. Because you have all these people suddenly debating, well, what should society be? And, you know, really getting into it. So I thought it would make sense. Sometimes just a cartoon just jumps out at you as you're writing. And I said I want to draw, you know, a table. I want to draw a tavern table with people drunk and talking. Probably three people at a table, I think. Because four, one person's blocking the other. And it's like, yeah, I think three. And We're gonna have a drunk conversation going on and then side by side we're gonna have a coffee house, coffee shop intellectual debate going on. So now I have to draw two tables. I think I'll use the same table. I did find some images for inspiration. It's a tavern. See, don't those people look dumb? Like, how dumb is their conversation? Whatever they're talking about, it's real dumb. But now you've got these people in a 1700s coffee shop and look at them. Look at them with their little fancy hair. They're hyped up. They got all kinds of shit to say. So that's just something. I'm not going to draw anything like this. A long time ago I said I don't do backgrounds anymore because they look stupid. It looks like a child did it. So I try not to do any backgrounds unless they're really simple. Now there's a couple images. a couple drawings a couple comics in this book where normally i just knew you know modern way but why we don't do backgrounds like that i'm just not going to do it except we hired an illustrator as i mentioned at the beginning today um to do stuff like maps and i was like you know what else this illustrator could do is a couple backgrounds we're going to try it it's an experiment if i don't like how it comes out if it doesn't feel wait but why enough i'll just get rid of the backgrounds but i have backgrounds that are going to happen in a comic uh but in a discussion between Sargon the Great and George Washington. There's a time machine involved. And so we're going to draw, you know, Mesopotamia background and 1700s colonial America background. And we'll see how it goes. But this is not one of the... That's like a full comic, so I wanted to, you know, make it good. This is just a little quick thing. It's not meant to be... It's not meant to be like a big thing. You know, it's a little... It's a little... It's a little ha-ha as you're reading. So I'm not going to do a background. So I just wanted to kind of, maybe I'll do this stupid hair though. Maybe I'll try to do this stupid hair. And then here, do I, do I, I don't think I'm gonna do those hats. I could. Hats? Why are we doing hats? And the hair actually is not a good idea because then it looks like they changed their hairstyle and probably these are just from different times. This is probably, this says. Tavern scene 1658 and this says coffee house from who knows when. Probably more like 1700. So it's more the time is different. So man, not only are these guys drunk, they're like 1662 drunk people. You know? So they also were like, they really didn't know anything. They didn't know shit. I guess the scientific revolution had kind of happened. So they might know a thing or two. But like, man. What does a drunk conversation in 1600s even sound like? What are they talking about? That's what we're going to have to figure out because we're going to have to do a dialogue, aren't we? This is going to be really small, obviously, just two. But before I would have in Pixelmator, I think I just had to, maybe there's a way to do it, but I would just draw two squares and put them next to each other and resize them and all that. Now they're going to be, so I'm just trying to picture the dimensions here. There's a table, there's people, they're saying stuff. I need dialogue space above them. I don't want it to be too big. I think the people can be kind of small. This is a little big maybe even. The problem is I need vertical space for what they're saying. Maybe this will work. Let's try this. Is it too small? But there's going to be a chair here and a guy and a guy and a guy. I think it's okay. Will you be able to see the drinks? I think so. I guess I could make it a hair bigger. They probably do it very quickly and it comes out just how they want. I'm not like them. So it takes me longer. But the second thing I'll say is, regardless of whether it's me or not, I think good stick figures are hard. for any i think good stick figures that have real expressions that that are funny in the exact right way or really capture expressions and i think that's i think that is something that people don't quite get is quite hard um it just takes a while you know if you do really simple you know you can do a really i could just do you know i can do a stick figure really quickly like this oh no oh yeah hold on i can just go like and then be like oh not like that but like You know, people think a stick character, they're like, right? Like, yeah, I can do that in one second, but that looks stupid. It's not funny. It looks dumb. Now, someone might find that someone who might do have a really good style that is funny that way. Because it's like sometimes you're thirsty and then obviously I drink water, but sometimes I just realize it's like 5 p.m. And I haven't had any water and I just wasn't thirsty. But then of course you'd be like, no, you're so dehydrated. Like it's probably making you feel tired. Like, well then I wish my body would be like, hey, I'm thirsty, but it doesn't do that. Drawing number four. atmosphere and here I will uh tease the next activity GeoGuessr um all right atmosphere so now this this here chapter six right we're in the enlightenment right we're near we're close to the uh we are close to the present this is chapter six um the so basically here let's just show you for a second so it's like this big how earth came together and formed how all the air got here how all the water got here how the tectonic plates work how land formed in the first place okay now we've got here we've got life so we started the origin of life and we that takes us all through all of evolution all the way to the moment when chimps and humans diverged so three we've got like humans and this takes us from the moment chimps and humans diverged all through hominins australopithecus down to the homo habillus homo erectus neanderthals get down to humans and behavioral modernity and language and all that four uh is civilization so now we go from we have humans that can talk and they are basically just like us but they're hunter-gatherers chapter four we show how that turned into agricultural revolution which then turned into early villages and cities and writing five we've got So now we go from the advent of civilization. We now see cities turn into empires. We actually talk about a bunch of specific empires. We go through the Mesopotamia, the Akkadian Empire, and the Assyrians. They were not nice people, the kings. We go through the Persian Empire, Rome, the Han Dynasty, Parthian Empire. We talk about Christianity being born and the Hebrew Bible. and the origin of the alphabet, stuff like that. Middle Ages and the Mongols and the Franks and the formation of England and the history of English. We're actually going to do a drawing probably tomorrow. That's how the formation of the English language, which is way more interesting than I realized. And eventually we get to chapter six, which takes us now to modernity. you know, basically modernity and how everything went completely crazy. We bring back page 1000, which was a principle, a metaphor from What's Our Problem? and talk about how everything just went completely bonkers. That's so the Enlightenment comic we just did is part of chapter six. Then we have seven today. That's where the population comic we did earlier today is from. This music's annoying me. Shut up. And today we talked about the Fermi paradox here and the multiverse and the unlikelihood of you being here and the fine-tuned conditions of the universe and all that. Chapter 8, we get into the future. This is a huge chapter, alternating fiction and nonfiction, talking about all the wild technologies. that are happening right now. I went and I interviewed over a hundred scientists, technologists, you know, tech CEOs and give the best predictions that we have today on what's going to happen. Go with the good story and then we paint out a bad story. If things go well or badly. And nine, we get to super intelligence. Kind of can't talk about super intelligence before talking about other stuff because it makes everything else seem irrelevant. And it's kind of like the 10, 11 years later, update on my AI post from 2015. A lot has changed, obviously. And then 10, we go to the rest of time and we go to the far, far, far future. It's just the far future. Far, far, far future. All the way to the end of the universe. That's the structure of the book. So, right now, we are, we're going to go back to chapter one. We're going to do a drawing where we're talking about the air. What is air and why is it here? We want to hear a crazy fact. So atoms are fucking small. So one at sea level, which is about where we all are right now, a cubic centimeter of air at sea level. How many air molecules do you think are in there? So the way we visualize this is picture a cube that's two miles to a side. So that goes way higher than know way up into the clouds um you know it's a giant massive cube it would take you hours and hours just to walk around it right huge packed with sand packed with sand to the brim that's how many air molecules are in one cubic centimeter of space um when you take a breath you're you're inhaling and exhaling what's the number i think it's about as many grains of sanders on earth but let me get the exact number here. Let's pull up atmosphere. Oh, actually, I think I have it somewhere else here. Hold on. So atmosphere. Yeah, okay. So a typical human inhalation breathes in 500 times that many molecules of the giant cube full of sand. So yeah. And it's like, you know, It's easy to forget all this invisible stuff is all around us But actually we are creatures of the air just like a fish is a creature of the sea take us out of here We are looking fish out of water we die You know and the birds are swimming through the air like the fish are swimming through the sea It's just a different substance. We're basically fish And it's flowing through our bodies at all times this air we can't live outside of it I mean this is all obvious, but it's also weird. You just don't think about it So and I tell a story about how You know, air, of course, is denser down here. It's like water is about as dense at the bottom of the ocean as it is at the top. The water pressure grows because the weight of the ocean is bearing down as you go down. But the actual air, the actual water density is the same because water can't really be compressed. But air obviously can. So down here, it's, you know, the gravity has made the air quite dense down here compared to how it gets less and less dense as you go up. And so I went to Cusco, Peru, which is two miles above sea level. Still really low, all things considered. But instead of breathing 13 trillion billion air molecules per breath, like I'm used to, I was only breathing in 9.5 trillion billion. So instead of 13, 9.5 trillion billion air molecules per breath. And I got sick and threw up the whole week and I was like dying because... That that's our bodies are so specifically fine-tuned to the era we're used to and so now I'm gonna have to explain that I'm gonna now show the atmosphere and show where Cusco is and Then a bunch of other things we're gonna show Everest top of Everest. We're gonna show Where are clouds and how high do they go? Where are? Weather balloons where are meteorites where do they burn up where do you see shooting stars where where are they in the atmosphere how about the aurora borealis um and a lot of other things where is the space station international space station where does space officially start where does the blue sky end right so we're going to answer all these questions in this one diagram now this is not an easy one either but it's at least it's not like drawing you know i like to not do too too many drawings in a row um okay So I made some notes here. Okay. Now I just have to think about how do we want to do this? So we're going to illustrate. By the way, let me know if the sound is right. So both the music and my voice are the right volume. You know, I've been changing things a little. Okay. So let's open a new dock. And this is going to be called Atmosphere. Now. Are we drawing the Earth? So this is one, this is going to be a fairly big drawing, but how big, right? Like, so there's five layers of atmosphere. Let's get rid of this. Let's open another one. Let's just talk here for a second. We've got the troposphere. Now, by the way, a lot of people on Earth, in fact, almost everyone on Earth prefers the metric system. Even a lot of Americans prefer the metric system, but most Americans Don't or at least if I say kilometers it means less to them than miles if I say Meters it it's harder to you have to kind of do some math before instead of just feet is But of course I want you know the book will be read hopefully all over the world and most people are gonna definitely not want that so what's great about a book that's not being self-published is there's just a bunch of Mechanisms in place to do shit fix things like that. So I'm doing everything in imperial and international versions of the book will all be translated to metric so everything in the all that figures in the book will be metric system so we're going to be doing imperial here miles instead of kilometers but for the people who are upset about that don't worry the book itself will not if you're a non-american you will have a metric system book with kilometers so troposphere goes from sea level so from zero to 11. Actually, it's a little tricky. Eight miles is the average, but it actually is different. So the definition of these layers is troposphere, it gets, the temperature goes down as you go up. That's intuitive, right? You go higher on the top of Everest is gonna be freezing, right? Because the air is thinner. But then what's interesting is there's something called the tropopause, which is the, if you go up high enough, you hit a point when the air when actually the temperature starts going up as you get higher that's because of the ozone layer and you know ways that you know absorption of uv rays now yeah so then we get to the stratosphere and that is the definition of the line between the troposphere and the stratosphere is the moment when temperature starts going up now temperature going up doesn't mean it's warmer for you you'd still be freezing in the stratosphere. It's just that because there's not enough air, so it doesn't actually trap heat and produce heat, but the molecules themselves are energized, which is the definition of temperature, you know. So it's not that interesting for us. It's not like it would get warm for us as we went out, but the molecules themselves are more energized, and that's the definition of these layers. I never understood that before. So the stratosphere goes up to, so 8 to 31 miles, 50 kilometers. Let's just be consistent here. Okay. Now we've got the, then the air, you hit a point when going higher starts, the temperature starts going down again. And now that's called the mesosphere and it gets down to quite cold. And it's actually the coldest place on earth. The lowest temperature on earth is the top of the mesosphere. So that goes up to 31, two, 50, miles. 85 kilometers. And then because the atmosphere starts again absorbing UV rays in a certain way, it starts getting warmer again. Again, not warmer for you, but the temperature starts going up and now that's the, okay, that is the thermosphere. That's why it's called the thermosphere. And so here's what's weird. The thermosphere gets so, the temperature goes up so high that it gets to 3600 degrees Fahrenheit or 2000 degrees Celsius near the top. Again, it would be freezing for you, but it's just the particles are massively, the air molecules are supercharged with energy. They're bouncing around, flying around, where if it was dense, it would be blazingly hot up there, but it's not. So it's not that interesting. So 53 to 375. So this is a huge layer. And I'm doing this now because if you want to plan out the vertical... distance here on the of the dimensions of the drawing we're about to do we need to uh we need to see how high we're going and what's that and then you get to the exosphere which is basically so you're already in outer space space officially starts in the thermosphere about 100 miles up or 60 miles up really most of the thermosphere is in officially what we would call outer space there's not a clean line but like and it would just be black sky there's no blue sky anymore there's not even much blue sky in the mesosphere but really none in the and you get higher. Now, exosphere, you're fully in space. I mean, the International Space Station is in the thermosphere. You know, the Hubble telescope is in the thermosphere. I mean, we're really up in full space. So the exosphere is just like full-ass space. Now, the exosphere is defined by the region where molecules up there, there's almost none. I mean, super undense air, obviously, very, very few molecules, but they are still bound by Earth. So that's why it's the exosphere and not nothing at all. It's still part of the atmosphere. And that's from 375 miles up to, or 600 kilometers, up to 10,000 kilometers or 6,200 miles. And that basically just kind of blurs into full outer space. And now you're above 6,200 miles. Now molecules can't even, they just float off into space. If we do the X, we can't take up a whole page with this. I mean, again, it would be nice if this were a blog. You can just picture. I would have the troposphere would be, you know, this thick. And then the stratosphere would be, you know. within the troposphere. So you would be, you know, airplanes fly within the troposphere. So you'd say, wow, like you just appreciate how thick the atmosphere is compared to with the part that we think of as atmosphere. We can't do that in a book. Even a full page, you wouldn't be able to, you know, a full page would be really cool. I'm not going to take up one. I don't think so. I mean, you could, it's a choice, right? I was planning to take up like a third of a page. If you take up a full page, okay. The book just added a page to the page count. One page won't hurt anything, but if you do this a lot, Now you've added 30, 40, 50 pages to the page count. You've gone from, I don't know, 560 to 610. Just look at the end of the book. It feels like a longer book. It's a more expensive book, right? It's a heavier book. So we don't want to do that very often. And the question is, if I'm doing a full page thing here, it's like, why? Why does the atmosphere, there's 300 illustrations. Why does this one get a full page? It has to really warrant it. Usually the full page ones are for like giant chapter summaries, you know, big. a big thing that summarizes everything we just talked about, that's a good use of a full page here. I don't think this is just one little section of chapter one. Doesn't really, I don't think it warrants a full page. So we have to figure out how to make it really interesting in a third of a page, maybe half a page. I don't think it should be half a page though. So obviously if we tried to make a third of a page 6200 miles, then like if we did the exosphere, Yeah, I don't think we're gonna do the exosphere because it's just gonna crunch everything. The exosphere is huge, right? It's gonna crunch not almost the entire thing will be exosphere and you won't be able to see anything. So I think what we're gonna do is the thermosphere at most is gonna be the highest with then a little tiny piece at the top. It'll just say exosphere with like arrows, you know, arrow going up, that more exosphere from here up. So 400 miles, let's say. So if it's 400 miles, just say we tried to do our diagram. So you gotta do some planning here first. So just say we tried to do our diagram like a third of a page like something like this. Now this starts at uh like 20 and it goes down to 207. Okay so it's about you know 180, 185 something like that. So 185 if that represents about let's just say for let's just make it simple here let's just go to say it's about 200. okay so if it's 200 and we're doing 400 miles that means every point is two miles right so the troposphere would be four points high so i think that's why i think we're not going to do it this way i think you can't do it to scale but to scale is what's interesting because i want to actually show i don't want to just show all these layers and that you have to read oh this one's thicker i want to actually show it so we have a few ways we could do it one way is we actually do it to scale but then the then we're talking about the troposphere is this big i don't think that's a great plan i mean it's cool but like is that interesting is it it is it interesting that like you most of this is the thermosphere and it's like i just don't think you're going to actually learn very much so i'm not going to do that now if this were the whole page even then it would be quite small um you know this would be this would be the troposphere if we did the whole thermosphere here um what would the stratosphere be would be about 23 so another 12. um not very big still 12. wait is that oh no no no i messed up because we're no longer at that scale anymore um 654 to 666 so 12 is now eight miles is 12. so it's like 50 more so 23 would be like 36. 35. Okay, so here's our stratosphere. The mesosphere takes us another 31 to 53, another 24, so another about the same. About the same mesosphere. This is called the middle atmosphere, the stratosphere and mesosphere. And then we get to the thermosphere, which is almost the rest of this, until the very top. And then basically it would be like this. And then it would just be like... Something like that and then you had like exosphere up here and it would just show that it just it goes on like that. Okay These lines are in my way right now. Let's just get rid of them for a second. So that would be our atmosphere That's the thermosphere. It's huge and that's a sphere. So if I want to draw Everest, you know, and I want to draw I Want to draw Everest and I want to draw things like that like airplanes. You're not gonna see anything in here. It's gonna be too crunched So we need the troposphere to be bigger. Now, again, I also don't take up a full page. So really, if I were really going to do it this way, it would be more like this. Yeah, you see, this isn't good. This is not interesting. So, so here's what we could do instead is we could, what is actually in the thermosphere? There's the aurora borealis, ISS, the Hubble, the beginning of space, low Earth orbit. I think we just ditched the ISS and we just go to where space begins maybe. How about that? Low Earth orbit starts at like 100 miles up. So I think we go up to where space begins, which is like 60 miles up. How about that? And then it's more like we forget the exosphere, ignore the exosphere. And we just do thermosphere and we kind of show the bottom of the thermosphere and then we go up from there, right? And I think we focus on the more interesting parts below. We want to show the troposphere. The only thing I'm considering is whether we want to do something like, so that would look something like, we would basically be doing something like, it would be more like this. Ignore the top part, it would basically be like this. Troposphere, and then you have a little Mount Everest and you have airplanes and you have clouds. And I think we could fit a lot in here. And then you've got stratosphere. whatever and then you just have like thermosphere and like a line up and space begins like here um that seems like a better plan now alternatively we could which i think is lame i've seen other ones do this where you could just do something like this um oops you could just do something like five even bars you know and you could be like troposphere and then it would just be like on here on the right you'd have like the actual mile And you could like see things like Aurora and we could put like the ISS and we could like, you know, I don't think it's that interesting because the whole point is to show scale. Because then like Everest is just huge compared to, I don't like it. We're not doing that. Now, the only other question I've got is whether we would want to do something like, so let's just copy this. Basically, whether we'd want to do something like this. So let's just get rid of this. So here's our diagram. here's our atmosphere of the four layers and this would just be again the beginning of the thermosphere and then what if we we could do something like have it be that big and then this could um basically be like this bar on the right that shows the actual like the full deal um i just don't think it's that i mean does anyone like here's what it could basically be like Exosphere just has satellites in the James Webb telescope. So I think we don't care about the Exosphere. But basically, we could show this to scale to show the whole thermosphere. And then we could basically show that this, draw like a dotted line. Let's put it red for now, just to be clear what we're talking about. Get out of here. X there. You know, we do something like this with, you know, like... one of these guys, you know, I'm talking about. Not that I would make it look less stupid, but like, that's kind of cool maybe. I mean, again, this is, it's interesting if we're trying to show like, wow, look how big the thermosphere is. But like, does anyone care how big the thermosphere is? Is that interesting? People are like, wow, I never realized all of that that we think of as so high is really just low compared to how big the thermosphere, but who cares about the thermosphere? It's not like it's like, oh, everyone, we always talk about like the full atmosphere and it's a thing. And you never realized how low all the things we talk about are compared to the full atmosphere. But it's like the atmosphere just becomes super undense and just blurs into outer space. So like, I think it's better to just, I mean, we could then show like ISS in here, you know, maybe that is kind of cool. Just, just, it would just be cool to show the full range of the Aurora. which would be like, you know, from here. The lowest part of the Aurora is like 60. Or I could just put some Aurora on there. I don't have no fucking idea how I'm going to draw an Aurora Borealis because it's going to be hell. And then I could put a little ISS like, you know, there. And I could put like the Hubble up here. And like low Earth orbit begins here. So it would be a way to show, maybe I will do it. Just for that. Just because people do care about that. Like ISS, Hubble, that is interesting. But then you start to wonder why not just do this and actually show the whole, show more of the exosphere. Because now really no one cares about the exosphere, right? The only thing interesting in the exosphere are the James Webb Telescope, which would be like on this scale, would be like way up here. But I think now it's like, we're not really talking about atmosphere anymore, right? We're just showing space. And on this scale, the moon, on this particular scale here, the moon would be like 250 times higher up than this. So it would be like, you know, a 10 story building up would be the moon. I don't think that's, I think we're just getting, we're doing too much in one drawing. So I think we keep it to something like this, but I think it might be worth it just to show where the ISS is. I'm going to leave it as an option, but we're not going to do it as the main thing. Okay, good. Good talk. Hey, Axie and Evolved. Hey, so good news for you is I just was talking about this. It would just be flat or else these would be incredibly thin layers. I think no earth for now. Okay, so we're just going to have layers like this. Now let's get the exact measurements right. Okay, is this even the right height total? Let's try to go a little smaller. This isn't a huge drawing, but let's just go a little smaller if we can. Now, okay, so how high... So if this is the 22.66, let's just make it 23. If you want to be really fancy, the heights of each layer are all consistent except for the bottom one because tropopause happens in different places in different parts of the earth. And we could make a little staircase. It might be kind of cool. It averages 8 miles high, 8.1 miles high, but over the poles, the troposphere is only 3.7 miles high and over the tropics, it's only 11 miles high. It's 11 miles high. Is that interesting or does no one care? Maybe I'll just do that on the far right. So I'm not gonna worry about that right now. Okay, so 23 is eight miles. It's really 8.1 miles. So if that's 8.1 miles, let's just say eight miles. So then, by 8, oh, fine, 23 divided by 8.1, let's just be exact, times, and now we've got 31, so 22.9. Okay, so this should be 65, this next one. So I think we should just say that it would get darker as it goes, right? So this would be like bright blue sky, this one. Maybe even like a nice lighter blue sky. No, it's not bright enough. This is an hour two and we can try that. CYMK is, you know, when you print, you don't use RGB color scheme. You use CYMK or CMYK. CMYK. And it's just not very... vibrant a lot of the colors. Light greens, light blues just don't work. See if I can do anything to make this a little... I can make it like darker like that. I think I'm not... yeah, I think here we want like light sky bluish. This one we now want to be darker blue and then it's gonna get basically black. Here we want like the really dark blue. Almost black. Probably a little darker. And then maybe here we want like this yeah and then I think we kind of just want black we could we could I took a note here the blue sky gradually fades to black between basically the towards the top of this it starts to fade so even if you're in an airplane the blue sky looks a little bit less bright and then by the time you get to 60 miles it's totally pitch black which is yeah here 53 so yeah Now there's two ways to do it. I could have this gradually fade up and I could have big bright lines that separate it or I could show like the layers like this. You see I could have four layers, but that's not really accurate versus I could have it kind of fade to black and then have bright borders that, you know, this isn't this is less accurate, but I think it's fine. I don't think we need to. I think it's nice to have this and I can get rid of the borders I think now. Yeah, I like that. So we've got our layers. Now I think we go it's taking up a lot of horizontal space to have these huge words i can make this smaller but i guess that's okay um could also put the words in here depends how many objects are going to be in here maybe the words should be in here because it's just there's not that i'm not drawing that much the most is in the troposphere in the troposphere i'm going to draw everest the cusco sea level because i just talked about it airplane i think we can fit the words in here Alright, so now, maybe I should draw like a little ground line. And it is informative in that way, but it's misleading and not interesting because if the temperature, if it actually got warm, it would be super interesting, but it doesn't. So then who cares if the atoms are more charged with energy, higher or lower? Now, by the way, what's interesting, what I learned is the reason that you got these anvil clouds is because, you definitely need something on the edge, is because Literally, this is where in the troposphere, warm air is below cooler air. So it's this convection where it's like, you know, warm air wants to rise and it creates this, which pushes air up. In the stratosphere, warm air is at the top. Cool air is at the bottom. So there's no convection. So there's nothing, there's no force pushing clouds up. So you end up with this, the top of these cumulonimbus clouds is the... The tropopause, the top of the troposphere. But I don't think it should be this color. Gray, maybe? Blue? Looks really bad. Real, real bad. Maybe white isn't the right color for the interior. The interior should be. I mean, again, people will get the point. It just looks so stupid. I don't know how to do that. It barely looks like a cloud. I think I need some texture in there. But how? I think his companies are amazing. I think he's one of a kind. I think he's the best person in the world at reasoning from first principles. And then also combining that with amazing intelligence and wealth and power and hard work. He just is a unique entrepreneur and he's changing the world in many ways for the better. Do I always agree with his tweets or his... the way he, you know, does his activism. No. The reason I don't talk about it very much and the reason I don't say those things publicly is that I actually know him pretty well. I know him well enough where I have, I speak to him a lot and I've given him constructive feedback in person many times. And I feel that when you know someone well and it's kind of a friend of yours, you should criticize privately. Not publicly. So I think when I first wrote about him, I didn't know him very well. I was, you know, a fan and I was excited to get to work with him. And I probably at that point would have said what I believe at any point, just like anyone else. I would have just been public about it. I was never trying to say good things about him or his companies because I had met him. I'm very like, kept it very real. in that regard. I told him from the beginning I'm not going to necessarily say good things and he was like, yeah, that's fine. I like negative feedback, whatever. I wrote good things about him and his companies because that's what I thought. I mean, I was amazed and I still am and I'm still really like, I admire him and I think he's amazing. The things I wish he would do differently, the things I have taken issue with, probably some of the things you have too. I've talked about it with him. personally and not publicly. And I think people don't, I think part of the issues, I think a lot of my readers don't know that we know each other really well and don't realize that I do talk to him and say these things to him in private. So they'll assume that I'm just like this fan who doesn't, you know, want to criticize him. And that's not true. I just don't want to do it publicly because he's a friend of mine. And what, what, what, you know, if I'm doing it publicly, what am I, when I could just text him that exact thought, Think about any friend of yours. Forget that he's Elon. I have other friends that are somewhat public figures, way less famous. And I'm not going to get on X and be like, this person's really, I totally disagree. I'm just going to text them about it. I'm going to call them. I'm going to argue with them in person. And that's how I think people should be with their friends. So that's the story. He doesn't you know he doesn't cut you out he uh he appreciates that i'll give it to him i think some people in this position would cut off people who disagree publicly he's not like that um so he gets plenty of criticism and i think he's self-aware i think he's aware the things that you know you probably uh don't like or that you wish he would do differently he probably agrees with you you know he's he's he's human he's flawed he uh doesn't always have the best impulse control and he knows that um But yeah, so that's my answer. You know what I can put here is the highest world record for a skydive. Alan Eustace. So Felix Baumgartner, Baumgartner, in 2012, famously with the Red Bull, big publicized thing, jumped from 128,000 feet. And then quietly, two years later, Alan Eustace, who you've never heard of, jumped from 7,000 feet higher, 135,000 feet. That is crazy. And so I think that's a fun little factoid to put in there. So you jump from the middle of the stratosphere. It's pretty crazy. So 80% of the air is here. And then 19% is here. And then 1% above that. But I don't think we care about that. The record height for a jet is 23 miles. Do we care? Probably not. So one thing I might do is... No, I'm not gonna do that into the blue sky because it's kind of exemplified by these Colors already I think we do the highest we do the ozone layer the highest sky jump and a weather balloon. So when you see a shooting star, you're looking up at the, probably the mesosphere, maybe if it's a bigger one, the thermosphere. I didn't know that. That was a new thing I learned. Like if you were up on top of Everest with no oxygen mask, you would die in like a day. So you can't even go up to the top of the troposphere down here. You can't even go to the top of this without an oxygen mask. Like airplanes fly down here. Think how high you are when you're looking down in a commercial flight, like you're here. So this shit goes way up. But it's also just like, yeah, of course, that ISS is really high. I don't know. Different people can take... What I like to do is put a lot of information out there and let different people who read it be interested in different things. Some people will be interested in the scale that, you know, who knows? They'll learn about meteorites from this and where they burn up. Like, I don't care. That's not my problem. Yeah. This is no reason this can't be one notch bigger.
