We actually could act, we should do some actual getting a better feel from India, for India to start off. Christoph, good to see you. Hope your day wasn't so bad. You think it's the bad mic? So what we're going to do, because it's one of my favorite things to do, and so I thought we could all do this together, is we are going to go to random places in the world. Where should we start? Okay, let's see. This thing's a little up a little. All right. So... Let's go to yeah, let's let's go get a better feel for India. Okay, so we're gonna go down How to kind of go like I mean depends okay, so if you go like here First of all how ballsy to live on the tip of India who gets to live here? Let's just check this out. This place is the very tip. There's got to be something down here some kind of um Okay, yeah southern tip of India see So this is this is where I would go This is the kind of place I would like make sure to go if I were anywhere nearby Let's take a look. All right. Oh wow Look at this dude. Look at this Right on the southern tip of India is this boss Is this just someone's India pictures or is this actually all down here? I think this is actually all down here. What a cool place in the world Okay, and then oh the southern tip of Yeah, so maybe this is the actual southern tip. I don't know. But anyway, so if we wanted to get a better feel for India and we started down here and went like this, this would take us like 10 hours, right? And it's all about your elevation. If we went like this, it might take us like two hours. And if we went like this, you know, it would take us three minutes. So I don't think going on a full... three-hour journey up India is a great plan for the live stream, I will say. But you really can get a better feel for somewhere, you know, doing this. And at some point, you know, you're like, oh, you're like, I hit the top, right? You're like, oh, I must be near. And then you're like, here. You're like, you've reached like the equivalent of like, you're here. Because the world is big. So... Now, we're gonna do some street view. Let's do somewhere in India. Let's start off here, okay? Oh, and look at the moon up there. This is like that kind of same geology going on. Oh, okay, look, this is a nice explainer here for us. So you can take a little hike. There's a cultural center, a Punu Walk. Okay, I wonder if anyone has been here that I know. But it does look like there's not too much going on. This rock is definitely the... the thing to see here. That'll be on the agenda. Okay, let's do somewhere in Indonesia. And you can also, I can take, I can take, you know, requests if there's a place, a country you want me to go to. Okay, what's going on in the middle of fucking Borneo here? Okay, that didn't work. What's going on? So here we are in Borneo, which is half, it's an island that is three countries. It's part of Indonesia in the south. There's part of Malaysia in the north. And then there's little Brunei, where I've been, by the way. Not many people you know have been to Brunei, but I have, look at this guy. He does not look dry, but he is, wow. Okay, what could, so obviously we had a guy walk by and got caught in the thing, or this is a very artsy scene. So it seems like a very artsy scene. You know, it's like this guy is thinking about his father, you know, who passed away, and this is, you know, but most likely someone just walked by the camera. Now, more importantly, what is he doing? Who knows what this guy's doing? He's catching fish? Probably just catching fish, right? He's putting out a net, and he knows that fish are gonna, this is a bottleneck. He knows they're gonna be right in this little area, so he can just kind of catch fish. Okay. I feel like that's cheating a little bit. Like, you have to kind of like, it's kind of easy that way. Okay, look at these guys. yep definitely well maybe there are those fish oh wow there's a whole thing going on over here it looks like this is just like a kind of a temporary tent set up situation to protect people from the sun while there's a bunch of dudes doing a job um i don't think anyone lives here right but this is in borneo by the way and i think it's in the indonesian part of borneo ufikmura we can just verify Okay, that was not helpful. That did not tell me what I thought it was going to tell me. Anyway, so, and meanwhile, here's my question. My question is, there's these guys, right? They're working hard. They're catching fish. And somehow, someone has a 360 camera here, taking this incredible 360 picture. Who has the camera? And is this guy, I guess. But what's his deal and how did he get this picture to Google Maps? Like I don't really get how anyone does this how this works Okay, Nepal. Yeah, let's go to Nepal. Good idea Okay I'm gonna just randomly throw this here somewhere All right some bird is look at this this giant water buffalo just on the sidewalk Man other countries have so much more fun. All right. This is just a pic so we can't do a 360 but Looks pretty. It's cloudy. I'm sure on a sunny day this is a beautiful place, but right now it's just hanging out with this water buffalo. Just hanging out on the sidewalk. Imagine coming out of your house and this dude's just there. It's just, I don't have that in New York at all. Let's go somewhere up in the higher mountains in Nepal. Okay, so we're gonna go up. We're gonna go up here and see what's going on. Maybe these will all just be kind of like hiking camps, but that's probably what I'm gonna... Prooks Primary School. Holy shit. This is the prettiest school in the world. Imagine going to school here. Oh my god. See, this is the kind of place that I would like to visit. Like, I'd like to just be like in this area and go on like a wandering thing and end up here. And I would definitely go into the school. I mean, I would ask permission and be nice about it, but I would need to see what the school is like in this. outrageously pretty place. Look at that valley down there. There's little tiny houses over here. Okay. You got these cliffs. You got the kind of Tibetan flags. And I wish I had these flags around. They're always kind of magical when I see them. Imagine living here. Now, the one thing that would suck for me about living here. This is definitely at some insane altitude. Let's try to find out. Proc? Primary school. I'd be shocked if this is on the internet anywhere, but... Oh, no. Pork. I just don't know where we are exactly. And obviously this place is not on the internet. But I don't know what the altitude is here. But, yeah. Someone... was here and they were like this is a sick spot and they took this picture. You can see they have the little flags down at the school. What an amazing place to come learn. I'm sure the kids disagree and they think it's a shit-ass school they have to go to but it looks cool to me. Okay, go to Dutch. I think that is, I think that means the Netherlands. Yeah, Weep at Hai, we're definitely doing another one of those. I'm gonna do Iran after. Okay, first let's do Netherlands then we'll go to Iran. My wife and her whole family are from Iran. She's from Maryland, but her parents are from Iran. So I've learned a lot about Iran. And I've eaten a lot of really delicious Persian food. Just had no Rue celebration. Oh, wow. See? You know, the places with the dots are going to be more random than the places with the whole streets. Excuse me. Okay, let's go here. Okay, we're in some countryside. Oh, wow. This is legit. What is this? This is probably a... My guess is this was a church and it's been retired to some kind of resort. This is what it looks like to me. It's too big to be. I mean, I guess it could just be a giant cathedral, but it seems to me... I like invading people's privacy. This is a great way to creep on people all over the world from your computer. Okay, this is nice. I could kind of like, I mean, it looks, I might be bored if I were here, right? Like, it seems nice, but now what? Like, I've seen the church. I walked around the little area and kind of now what, right? Like, I guess I'd read. I would be like, let's just go like read and find a spot because clearly there's not too much to do in this area of the Netherlands. Okay, Iran. Let's go to Iran. Let's go somewhere really random. It's kind of surrounded by small mountains. And someone went up here and they took a thing and they somehow got it onto Google Street View. I will never understand how. I'm sure it's some automated thing where they just post it with the location and then Google does this, but I don't know if they need permission. Some motorcycle. This is the kind of thing I would like to do actually. I like to be driving and just like drive off onto the sand and go like take a picture and then somehow magically put it on Google Maps. I don't know, how does everyone else get a 3D picture in the first place? I just don't get how this whole ecosystem works. The only thing more confusing is who the fuck writes all the Wikipedia articles. Okay, cool. So we're in the desert. We're in like the hardcore desert. Speaking of the desert, I think we should go to Saudi Arabia. We did that last night and it was a lot of fun. Yeah, you see is this a sit now this isn't the same place we were last night, but it's similar This actually might be you know what we were here last night. This is the one spot I picked in Saudi Arabia late last night This was the late night weird crowd, you know, this was the it was the people who are up at you know 1am or it was people in other parts of the world waking up, but we had a weird little session and we ended up here and This is like so Saudi Arabian right isn't this what I would picture to be in the desert there is And we were trying to figure out what what is this made of it looks like it's probably made of clay right is that's kind of clay and maybe some wood chips and you can actually think I think we can like somehow go in there, but I don't remember how But anyway again someone here with a 360 camera took this but now we're interested in the middle of the desert Saudi Arabia and I think we should go to like Riyadh and see what's going on in a Saudi city because I know nothing about this country. Okay, this isn't exactly what I was thinking about but it's kind of cool. Farm trees, it's kind of tropical. See I feel like there's a lot of this in Saudi Arabia like these like kind of government things like telling you who could pass and what's where you are or maybe that's just like an informational sign, I don't know. Senegal, good idea let's go to Senegal. Okay. Ooh, and then after we're going to go to the Gambia because I'm obsessed with the Gambia because imagine being a country with this shape inside of another country. It made more sense, by the way, when I zoomed in once and I realized that there's a river and it's basically just, I don't understand how, I need to read the history of this. How did basically people go to those one river, the biggest river in Senegal and say, everyone who lives right on this river, we're now, it's our own country and we get the river. And somehow Senegal said okay. Or maybe Gambia was already here and Senegal was like, hey, you can have your river, but we're literally taking everything else around you. So, I don't know. Or maybe this is one of those colonial borders where like the people in like the, you know, the brainstorm room in London like drew these lines and everyone here just had to fucking live with it. I don't know. But anyway, let's do somewhere in Senegal. Okay. This is a national park. It's probably pretty. Let's see what's happening here. Okay. Wow. This guy is kind of... I was going to go to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I was going to go to Kinshasa. I was going to go to Goma. But I ended up in Nigeria. Okay, so we are in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the west side. And there's some ladies having... It looks like more of like a book club. It doesn't look like lunch. There's no table, I think. So they're having a meeting of some kind. And we have a nice little bridge here. And oh my god, look at this shit. These people are having... Maybe they were... Yeah, look at the kids in the tube. Oh my god, look at all these swings and ropes. And it looks like you can walk across. I want to go here so badly suddenly. This looks like a ball. It's like a playland. It's like a play park. There's a basketball hoop. This is like recreation center here. So, yeah. This is somewhere I now yearn to be. That swing has seen better days. But in general, this is fun. Now, these might be... I don't know. I don't know what they're meaning about. I am curious, but... We won't get to find out. Okay, so that was in, yeah, that was in DRC. Where else do we want to go? Let's move over to, ooh, Madagascar. What's going on in Madagascar? All right, now we're in Madagascar on, looks like, what is this? Hotel? I don't know, hotel, government building, I don't know. But we're in Madagascar, and so here's a fun fact for you. Madagascar, so, you know, humans originated in Africa and then they branched out to Europe and Asia and then they eventually ended up in Australia and eventually going over the Bering Strait into the New World. And this is... And Madagascar still wasn't settled. You assume, of course, people came from Africa and, you know, found Madagascar. It was actually people, I think, from the Philippines or Malaysia or somewhere who left their... left there and actually came all the way down on boats and ended up hitting Madagascar. So it was settled like very recently, which is super interesting to me and surprising. So yeah, okay, so here we are in Madagascar. This is some guy's thumb. This is this guy's thumb. And okay, so maybe some tourists just like to take these things and put them online. I don't know. But I'm happy they do. Okay. Now I want to go to like a little island somewhere. You know where we could go? Somewhere I've been before actually. I started Wait But Why in Easter Island. I went there and was like I have to come out of here with like blog posts and like a designed blog and because I have to start this thing. So I went there and said I'm not leaving Easter Island until then I went there for a month. Wrote the first few posts there. It's an amazing place. Okay and a little fun fact is... Yeah, so here we are Easter Island. There's a lot of this, you know, I've actually been here I've been in this place before because this is kind of the main place that you go if you want to go scuba diving or something And so yeah Wow brings back the memory so I met the guy who was I was staying in a motel and the guy who owned the motel His grandmother was 101 and lived living there as well. He introduced me to her. She spoke no English or Spanish She spoke Rapa Nui I think that's the name of their language been a while but anyway he told me that she is appalled that everyone from other parts of the world wants to come to Easter Island she said why would people come you know they had movie theaters over there why would they come here to see us some stones you know because if you've been there 101 years the statues are unbelievably unexciting and so and so yeah Okay, let's see if we have any... Oh, Namibia. Okay, let's do Namibia. I'd like to visit Namibia very badly. I really haven't visited enough places in Africa. It's high on my list. Alright. Cool. So, this is like... It looks like a deserty. Very definitely deserty. And rocky. This is cool. This must be... What is this? How do rocks end up like this? Like, glacier? activity? Are there glaciers in Namibia? I don't think so. Not for a long time. So I don't know how rocks end up like this. But, because if you see a huge rock like this in, you know, in the northern U.S., you know, that's just a glacier dropping. But I have no idea how this happened. Wind erosion. I guess, yeah. Man, I guess, it seems like, yeah, I guess these rocks are. Yeah. Show us the stands you visited. Okay, cool. I will. So I went to, here's a trip I did in 2007 by myself as a little exploration. I went to, I flew, I just stopped in Beijing and then flew all the way to Uwumqi, that I know I'm pronouncing wrong. So I went here for a little. Then I went to Yining, which is right on the edge of the western side of China. So I went to Yining. And then from there I went into Kazakhstan just for a few days Uzbekistan and went up to you know some of the spots there Samarkand then I went to Kurdistan and I went to this little lake oh well maybe I can show you this is Lake Songkul up in the mountains and there's yurts here oh they would be so cool if there were you could see see a street view if someone someone took a thing oh my god they did oh sick yes yes okay I went here This is a cool place to go, I recommend. You don't have to like, you're not like accosting these people, like they're down, they've like signed up to like host tourists. So you go, but it's legit, these people are actually just living as nomads in yurts. And so I walked from here, like up to those mountains, right? And I was like, it's like these hills, right? And I was like, oh, I'll walk five minutes over to those hills and just like skip up those hills and come back. Those hills are an hour walk away. It's one of these super deceptive things. And then walking up those hills, I mean, this was an all-day activity just to go here and then back. Anyway, and then one day I went out with the shepherd and he took his sheep out and he took them up there and I just kind of hung with him while he did his thing. And then another day they had on Sundays, I think, is every Sunday they have a horse race. The men in the city have a horse race. And I tried their fermented mare's milk. And I almost died. I broke out in hives and I was extremely sick. And I thought that I'm going to die here and they're going to just roll me into the lake because they're like, oh, I guess that guy died. They don't care. And no one even knew I was in Kurdistan. People, I didn't, hadn't communicated in a week. And so no one was going to ever find me. I was going to be a missing person forever. But I survived and it was all good. They were very nice. So anyway, if you're ever in this area for any reason, come. do that, do the yurt stay at Lake Tsongkou. So I did that, and then I went, oh, and then the last cool thing I did on that trip is I went over the, I actually, you can, there's something called the Toragut Pass. Yeah, so you can, usually you fly to China from Kyrgyzstan, but you can take a zoom out here. This is on the border of Kyrgyzstan and China. And you can take a car and it goes, lines up this thing all day, this mountain, and then you get to the top and that car can't go over the border because that's China. And then a car from China that you've arranged comes all that you see coming up, the thing, and it comes and picks you up, brings you down. And it's just a very cool way to cross the border. I was unbelievably nauseous that day from food poisoning, but that's beside the point. Okay, let's do a couple more. Let's do like three more. Oh, Taiwan, okay. And you kind of go like this and now you're up looking at the woodpecker. And then you're like, I'm gonna go back down. Like that's scuba diving. You literally can just go up. and around and explore down there and explore up there and like that to me is like it seems like the most fun thing ever but i feel like you have to really get over the ears issues and i don't know um but i can see why people are obsessed okay let's go to southeast asia somewhere let's see what's going on in laos wow look at thailand versus laos i don't know whether that's because thailand like made it an initiative government initiative to get this done or like google has a partnership with thailand it must be right it can't just be that like There's this Thailand is well mapped out. My God. Holy shit. That's more well mapped out than any country you've seen so far. Every corner of Thailand is completely street viewed. I don't really understand what's going on there. Look at this shit. Look at this in Laos being pretty. Wow. This is nice. Wow. The palm trees. What a nice place in the world. Oh man. So yeah. Okay I don't know. It must have been either their government or some partnership with Google where every street in Thailand is mapped. Yeah, here we are at this intersection. All right. I have a trip in mind, which is South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya. I feel like that would be fun. I really want to go to Mali very badly. Yeah, so I'll tell you something actually here's the trip I want to do most and I know that is no way it's gonna happen I think I want to do most is cross the Bering Strait and drive from New York to Mumbai I know that's not allowed I've learned that the hard way by having I learned it easy way by having to google it and learn but so there's this Niger Camel Caravan Okay, this is something and you know how I found this you know I discovered this I discovered it by doing this activity alone. I was like, what the hell is going on in Niger, right? And so I went down here and there was, I think, like one street view. I think there was like, yeah, something like this. And it was a desert oasis. Ah, shit. And there were, there were like dudes there with camels. And I was like, wow, that is like, oh man. Okay, so anyway, I don't know. I can't find it now, but I was there. And so I went and read about it. And there's, I think it's, is it this? There's one page that really explains the shit out of it. I think it's this. I don't know if it's this one, but either way, basically these guys are doing something like a tradition that's been done for hundreds of years and yeah, five millennium. Well, yeah, whatever. I don't know how long. But anyway, they go out on these camels for six weeks on a trek and they like old school, like trekking through the sand desert on camels. And they... are there to extract salt, I think, or deliver, or they're doing some kind of trade. They're getting something, I think they're getting salt from the salt flats in the desert, and they're bringing them back where they sell them. And I was like, how do I get on one of these caravans? Seems like a great idea. I'm sure once on day three, I'd be like, this is an awful plan. But then I was like, the way I could do it is probably somehow reaching out to these people and agreeing to pay them and let me come. But I'm like, These guys definitely already have enough they're dealing with that me being there with them is... I have to actually learn how to ride a camel. Like, they have to give me one of their camels. And I was like, ah, it just seems like this is not really a great plan. And also what happens if I get sick on day eight or something? And like, I don't know, there's not many hospitals in the middle of the camel caravan in Niger. But I just can't believe that shit like this... Still is happening and we don't you know in America We don't realize this is going on and you know and it's just like this world has a lot of things going on on this this one planet, you know at any given time So yeah, this is what it looks like Okay Okay, we'll do Rwanda. I always thought that if clouds were rare, imagine if there were no clouds anywhere except for like in Southern Australia. It would be like going to see the Northern Lights. People would be like, you've got to go see the Australian clouds sometime in your life. It would be like a bucket list item. Like, oh my God, the Australian clouds, they're majestic. They'd say like pictures, like the pyramids, they say pictures don't capture it. You have to see them in person. It's like they're just floating in the sky. That's what it would be like. But we have clouds everywhere, so no one cares. If we had northern lights everywhere, no one would care. If we had waterfalls everywhere, no one would care. So a lot of it is about kind of novelty and rarity. But I do think we should probably appreciate clouds more because they are cool. They're giant sculptures in the sky. Okay, well this was cool. That was a cool stop. So can you swim in there? Is it dangerous? Is it like, is it going to fall into a cave or something? I don't know. I might like risk it and try to go under the waterfall. This is going to be representative of the book. And I've been working on it with a bunch of people. I've gotten good ideas. This idea came from someone named Gabriel yesterday. This, by far the coolest part of this, this triangle. He had the idea to do that. And now I got regretful because I wanted the whole thing to be like twisty and... you know, like intricate like this and that would be so cool looking and instead it still looks like a four-year-old's play set. But what can you do? So I also had an idea when I just saw this, actually. I'm not working on this first. This is one of the more boring things we work on here. And it's only when I'm like sick of doing real drawings that we come back to this. This is fun. What if I, what if it was like, you see, I wonder if it's better. And I kind of hold it by this thing, like the little stick guy can, or maybe there's a handle. I don't know. It's just an idea. I'm going to leave it how it was for now. But it's just an idea. The problem with this is it's something that the lighting looks. Now you're under it. Although I guess I could be upholding it. Like I'm doing the hard things, which are like from scratch, new things, as opposed to like taking an existing thing and making a few iterations of it, which are coming up later in the book. Like I can do that later. Or, or sometimes I have a long comic on the blog that can't be, you don't want to have a long comic in the book. Cause it's like vertical space is what makes the book longer. Right. So you want to condense vertically. So condensing those, that's not that interesting. And also it's, I think, I should do the hardest things first on this live stream. So the hardest things are new things. And I have like seven more new things. If I got those done, I'd be happy. And then there's two more that if we have time. So seven or nine. And then this hypothesis, maybe we can work on a little more. And that's the agenda. I want to get seven things done. So if I can get like two done now, and then we'll go do some geogetser. Okay. So we're going to start today. We finished, we were working on smears yesterday. the concept of a smear and I can actually show you what we came up with. And some of this really was, it was Yassine. It was a commenter in the chat named Yassine who actually helped me hugely with this thing. Where is it? So I was trying to make a smear on the forehead and I was having a hard time. And he gave me a good suggestion. Put it on the left and then push it over to the right. So that was helpful. And then branded. So the idea here is like talking about how someone, you know, this is someone who's been smeared on Twitter. And a smear is different than a criticism, right? Criticism is all fair. And really mean criticism is even fair if someone's being a real, you know, awful person about something. But a smear is when it's something that most people would agree is unfair. It's either lying about them, it's strawmanning them, and it's making someone, it's trying to ruin someone's reputation, kind of, that doesn't really deserve it. That's a smear. So this person's smear. And I wanted to talk about how there's kind of a smear web that can happen, which is when, just say there's someone who's, who, you know, a certain political group doesn't like. You know, and maybe this person's an asshole. Maybe that's why they don't like him or her. And that person has a radio show or a podcast or a TV show and says, you know, has four opinions, right, that they like to talk about. And three of them are kind of asshole opinions, right? But one of them is actually kind of just a pretty reasonable opinion. What happens is they'll smear the guy as bad, and therefore all of his opinions get smeared as bad. Including the one that's not so bad. So now when someone else tries to say that other opinion that happens to be shared with the person that the group doesn't like, that person now seems like a bad person because they're saying an opinion that is shared with this person even though the opinion itself is not actually bad. And now that person suddenly gets kind of smeared. The smear travels from the person to the opinion to this person. And even now if that person has some guest on their podcast, maybe people are saying you shouldn't go on that person's podcast, like they're bad. And now maybe someone who goes on their podcast gets kind of shunned. So the smear can actually travel from person to idea to person to idea and actually like kind of morally pollute each node along the way. And that's this concept that I think I've been seeing a lot of trying to illustrate it. All right, so for the smear web, I think... Alright, I think I'm gonna start with a TV person. That's my clippings. This is where I put things, little pieces of drawings that I use again and again. Smear whip. So I have a couple ideas here. I mean, it's always easier to just, you know, bring a guy like this. So I could just be like, this is a person, you know, and they hold idea A70. Okay, so... Ah, music loud. Okay, good tip. And, and so what's going to happen is, uh, and then we're going to have like their guest, um, and you know, they're going to say these opinions. They're going to hold these opinions. Um, and Right, and so, um, don't sweat it, Alan. We love you. All right. So now we got, we got this, um, and we've got this. Um, okay. Uh, yeah. So what I was going to show is like, basically we've got, uh, so we've got, this person's like, boom, boom, boom. Right. And And then this person also is like, boom, boom, boom. And then they have this person is on their show. Right. And so my point was going to be that that maybe this person over here is kind of objectionable. Maybe not even. But this person is in the targets of some kind of, you know, Twitter mob of some sort, whatever. And so they get smeared as bad. Let's just take the smear here for a second just to exemplify what I'm talking about. So this person. gets smeared as bad um but then the smear also travels to all of their their viewpoints um and and what i was going to say is you know that that that a viewpoint d might be something that's not actually objectionable maybe it's just free speech is good right maybe it's that uh we need police reform something that is that might go along with a bunch of other views that are crazier right but that itself is a totally reasonable view And what happens is, now this person also thinks this, this has been, viewpoint D has been associated with, oh, no, no, no, no. It's the kind of view that this person has. And so therefore it's bad. And anyone who says it is also bad. But this person's actually not doing anything bad. They have what we're going to say is three very reasonable viewpoints, D, E, and F. When I say reasonable, it's obviously subjective, but things that most people agree are reasonable. Versus here, this person's a little bit more, you know, controversial, a little more fringe. And so now when you find is that this person goes on their podcast and they get kind of like, oh, well, you know, you're all you shouldn't you went on that person's podcast. Oh, you know, don't you know, we shouldn't, you know, unfollow this person. They went on this person's podcast. Right. And so you see how a smear can branch from one person and it can actually travel. And so I can do like a streak show, like a smear traveling. Right. So the question is, this is very straightforward, right? It's a simple, it's a simple little diagram that I think gets the point across really well. The alternative is I actually draw like a full, a more of a full scene, right? Like, so it's like, it'd be something like a desk, you know, a desk here and you've got your like TV hosts, right? Something like this, you know, and they're saying A, B, C, D. And then over here, you've got a podcaster, you know, and the podcaster is also saying this and this and this. And then you've got a guest, their guest on their podcast and sitting there. So it's like more of a scene. You know, we can kind of do like a, you know, little line to make it clear that they're not in the same room. And so now we can show how the smear now travels like this. So the question is like more of a full scene where you draw the real people with facial expressions. Right? With the same idea, or just little stick drawings that get the point across. So let's see what someone thinks. I want a second opinion. And meanwhile, I'm going to gather these smears up. Shit. Yeah, I kind of like the hopping idea. Let's see. Radio Garden. No. Is that the thing where you can click a radio station from anywhere in the world? That's kind of a good idea. Maybe we should do that later. Okay, wait. I'm going to add in another procrastination activity. I don't know if you're talking about the same thing I'm thinking of. Radio Garden? Because it's the thing where you can literally tap a radio station anywhere on the planet and listen. And I feel like that would be also fun, kind of like Google Street View, but a different thing. I've had a lot of fun with that before. I like what you're saying, not really a sloth. And the reason is I'm rooting for the bottom one because it's just easier. It can be done in 15 minutes or 30 minutes, but not in an hour. But I think I'm going to go bottom one. And not just because I'm being lazy, but because I do think there's something satisfying about that. You're trying to get the point across, right? And also... One thing I don't, if I don't have to put in, you know, if I put in a TV host, I have to kind of give them a, I have to give them more like, you know, more info. And I want to be very neutral here. You know, I'm not trying to, I'm actually not trying to like secretly attack anyone, you know, political group here. I'm talking about smears, you know, you know, the groups that do the smears. There's a few of them, but I'm not trying to like, so yeah. Okay. Let's. Yeah, it doesn't illustrate it yet. And I agree with that. Because I haven't, I haven't, this is just a, this is just a sketch. I'm going to go and actually figure out how to do the smear later. I haven't done that yet. I just wanted to kind of show the general idea. Let's actually get rid of these for now. Let's see. Why is this being glitchy? So, most people who follow me know I'm a big fan of the YouTube channel KurtzGassat. And I love their posters as well. And this is a sick poster. And so I'm going to leave this up for a second. So I'm gonna actually change the music to this dude's brother, Mikel. These are two brothers that make great, great Nintendo and chill type playlists. So here's, this is Zelda and this guy also does Pokemon music, but. It's good stuff. Yes. Oh, it's desktop wallpaper. I wonder, I don't know. But anyway, I think they really worked hard on actually coming up with a better way to display. This is, I think, better than the normal tree of life. I think they really actually made something better than what currently exists here. I think they worked really hard on this to get it. I think it actually has a lot of real information in it that can be... useful for anyone who wants to understand this and it's just cool looking. Anyway, their channel is the best in general and their stuff. All right. So closing that. Okay. So let's get back to our situation here. All right. So I want to, for now, delete this scene. We're going to see if you make it look really good like this. Simple is good, right? So let's get rid of our lines here. This is all just... Now, you know, I think it depends on the environment. Like if you're in like a pretty normal environment, a smear web can't go that far. Maybe this opinion gets tarnished and people who say it maybe get like, you know, scolded, but it's that's different than, um, just need to water the dogs. Um, that's different than If it's next level where people are really scared and it's kind of like a scary time McCarthyism or right now Or you know, obviously, but you know, I'm sure in other countries it's you know at certain times it's been even more extreme but the concept of like Opinion D getting so smeared that someone who says it doesn't just get sold it scolded But they get like they're bad now period like they're they've now nope they're unforgivable and that's it and now What they other opinions they say are also bad because it's the kind of thing that are said by bad people and their podcast guest is also in trouble like right so It's that requires a pretty ugly society Situation to be happening and I think we're in one right now, which is why I think this kind of thing is happening like You know people are getting in trouble for who they had on their podcast based on who that person also went on, you know, like you are, you had someone on your podcast who also went on this person's part. Like, what is that? That is crazy. So that's what I'm trying to get across here. That's old. No sand for you. Okay. Um, um, so colors matter in this book a lot. Um, like, so you have to be careful with red and blue because people will interpret it as Republican and Democrat in America. And that's, I only want to do that if I'm, or at least as conservative and, Progressive, but I'm unless I'm going for that which I am sometimes in the book I want to make sure not to confuse it So that's why if something is red blue and you know, then it's fine, right? But if it was just say his opinions were all like red red red and then Something else it would look like I'm saying something that I'm trying to say You can make it a little well depends what I want to bring these in a little bit Not only did I read their book immune I read it As one of the feedback givers, I read a first draft of it because I'm pretty good friends with Philip who wrote it. Philip is the founder of Kurskisat and he is still the guy who writes all the scripts and does a ton of research, writes the scripts, and then he's got a giant team of incredible animators and other people, researchers. But we actually started these Wait But Why and Kurskisat started around the same time and we collaborated really early on. One of my first 10 posts, he reached out and said, can we make a video about this thing as a collaboration? And usually, I wouldn't want to do that. I don't really want to just like, it's a distraction. But I watched one of his videos and I was like, oh, this is great. Sure. And I talked on the phone. I was like, I like this guy. So we did it. It was about the putting time in perspective article. That big timeline, infographic post of mine. And then they made an awesome video of it. And then we just became really good friends. And so not only did I read his book, he read the long version of this book. He's one of the people I asked to. I didn't want to make it not many people read the long version that I knew was going to at least 250 pages of that were going to get cut. But I wanted advice. I wanted feedback on what to cut, right? You know, I wanted to, it's good to get some fresh eyes on it. And so he was one of the people that had to suffer through the long version. Okay, and so what did I wanna do here? Do I wanna, maybe like geometric a little bit. All right, so we're gonna do this now. I'm trying to think about how many, you know, it's always a decision, like you could just explain this whole thing and then have this one image, right? Or you could explain it and just show, so, you know, take Bob with opinions A, B, C, and D, right? You show this, then you do a second one. And you explain how this group doesn't like Bob, so they smear him. And that, you know, you say you start off the first one is just Bob with four opinions. No smear yet. Then you say, no, you know, you smear Bob and you say so he smear. But then you say this also travels out to his opinions. Then you explain the next whole thing and then you show the rest. So is it in three things? You know, is it in one? These are always decisions you have to make. And it's a different calculus than it is with the blog. With the blog, I'm always like, yeah, you know, the more, if I can tell this in five parts, build this up. So first you just see Bob, then you see Bob with his opinions, then you see the smear, you know, it's the clearest. It's the clearest way to do it, which is why I'll always do that in the blog. I'll just go for the, but not in the book, because then you add page length. So I'm trying to be economical without losing clarity. Nikki Case, I'm a huge Nikki Case fan. And we're also friends. I got to know Nikki, not nearly as... well as I know Philip, but, um, Nikki is a really fascinating person and I'm obsessed with, um, the interactives on endcase.com. Great interactives. Um, the one on media, I think, I think I actually linked to a few of them in this book. I talk about one of them because it's so, it's such a great way to explain, um, kind of political segregation, geographic segregation. Okay. All right. So let's do something here now. I'm delaying here because I don't want to make decisions. Okay, so we're going to say, we're going to talk about this. I'm going to say that, let's pull off the writing for a second. Okay, I'm going to make a little bit of, I'm going to add just a tiny bit of things here so that I can actually refer to these people. I think I'll make this guy Bob. I can change this later. This is easy. Okay, that's Bob. And let's make this, this is Angela. I don't know. Okay, fine. That works. And now, yeah. All right, so that's Angela. And this, this is Jason. Maybe Jason's just nothing. Okay, so Jason's just chilling, I think. Right? Because I don't want to give him a hat, too. It's weird. Sunglasses makes him look like a... cool cat i guess i could give him little glasses let's try um i don't know i don't think i like those i don't think i like those jason um is this is this what we're doing here making jason like a mad scientist or my dad um uh so you have to also be careful with like anything people people will read into anything and be like oh that's supposed to be and i'm like no it's literally just me trying to draw hair and being bad at It's not supposed to be anyone. This is a mess. Let's just try this again. Why does Jason look like this? This is so like, what did Jason do to deserve that hair? I'm not doing it to Jason. I'm not doing it to Jason. He doesn't deserve it. Let's just leave Jason as is. Okay. So now, oh, you know, maybe I could just give him like normal dude hair here. Hold on. He's such a sassy pants now. Why is Jason such a sassy pants? No, no, no, get out of here. Okay, this is Elvis. All right, there we go. There's Jason. Good enough. I don't know. It looks weird to me. Now it just looks weird that they don't have faces, right? It's like they either, I mean, the hat is fine with no face, but it's just like, why do they not have faces? I don't know. All right. Okay, good enough. See, I said this every day now, multiple times, because I'd like to make the point clear that... It's a good habit to get in if you're a perfectionist to have just like a button that you can press that says good enough and that's when it's like No more work on something that doesn't actually matter like the book is not going to be more effective or funnier or more useful or more fun to read if I put faces or not and so it's just like stop it and move on right so because otherwise the perfectionism will have everything take so long every single thing will be just mired in torturous decision making you know paralysis and can't can't have to move on imperfect is the name of the game okay so now what are we doing here are we doing arrows or lines um i think we're gonna do arrows um yeah i think we're gonna do arrows do i want hand-drawn arrows for this um No, I think we want wide arrows so I can put maybe smear stuff inside. Okay, so let's get one of my wide arrows. Thought clouds? No, because this is stuff that they publicly express, right? So this is specifically supposed to be stuff that these people say. It's nothing to do with what they think, which is a big theme in the book, by the way. Inner self and outer self. We all have both. Inner self represents what you think. Outer self represents what you say out loud. When you're in a safe space to be yourself, you know, an idea lab type environment, your inner self matches your outer self. You just say what you think. You don't worry so much about it. Say what you think and if it's wrong, people will tell you it's wrong and you'll argue about it and then you'll come to something and you'll move on. When you're in a not safe place, when you're in a place where you're going to get judged as an awful person for saying the wrong things or stupid person. or one of them, right? Then it's scary. And so the inner self stops matching out herself and inner self hides, becomes in the closet, becomes quarantined inside your head, which is a huge shame for the group because everyone's doing that. And now what's happening is their inner selves aren't connecting with each other anymore. They're all hiding alone in their heads. And you have a bunch of people performatively trying to say the right things with each other to be in the tribe. And the whole thing has fallen into the domain of the primitive mind. The primitive mind has taken over the group. And that sucks. It happens to all of us. We're all really prone to this, to doing this as a species. It's just who we are. So yes, this is an outer self discussion. This is about what people are saying, which is part of the point, is the smear is making people, makes people scared to be themselves on the outside. And so you have a lot of people, because of smear webs like this one, not doing it. Hmm, I have another idea. I'm wondering whether I want to make the, reserve the arrows for the direction of the smear, is like the smear path. And then just do lines for everything else. Let's try that. Hmm, I guess the point is, all those are smeared too. It's just not part of the web that we're looking at. So this is now the direction of the smear. And I'm gonna, hmm. because just see how ugly this is if I do it like this to make it clear who's saying what yeah okay I'm gonna try this because because what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna maybe do these separately I'm gonna take do this first okay so first we're gonna have uh we're just gonna explain the sitch which is that you've got yeah I think I should make these orange for clarity because that's the low-rung color in her book and then green just be like yeah okay then maybe just something here um okay this is this is weird looking i know but i think it's better best for clarity so we're gonna say we're gonna start so the first thing we're doing here is we're going to take this and divide it um one thing and then we're gonna This, and this, and this, and that group, and get rid of it. All right. Oh, no. Yeah, we're there. All right. So we're going to start off and be like, hey, here's Bob. He's got these opinions. Three of them, most people would agree, are pretty shitty. But the fourth one is something that's much more reasonable, you know, according to most people. But this group, you know, because these opinions are bad, you know, Bob now, it's almost like the smear starts with these opinions. And because Bob says those, he's bad. And actually, opinion D gets caught in the crossfire here. So, so now, okay, so I think it's that opinion A, B, and C, anyone who holds them is this group's enemy, right? And so, yeah, maybe that's, because I was thinking, maybe the smear starts here, and it's like, he says those, so now he's smeared. and so is D, blah, blah, blah. But it might just be too complicated because I think the point here is that Bob has already been branded bad because he holds A, B, and C. So there's a smear on him. In fact, I think the very first thing should not have this in it. It's gonna look a little lopsided, but that's okay, because it'll make sense later to the reader. Okay, so go like this, and we go like this, and we group, and we... get rid of it so now it's like okay here's oh wait let me get rid of it okay so we've got bob and he's like hey shitty opinions and so bob is smeared so first we have bobby's this is and i'll put a smear on him and this is going to be the first this is going to be the first where did i put my smears here so bob has his smear because he says these things okay so now um is that Yeah, all right, so Bob is smeared You know what I think the hat should go because this is supposed to be a forehead smear and that kind of solves a problem here anyway Yeah, okay, so Bob's Bob here's Bob with his forehead smear All right So now let's just save that that's gonna be smear web one is this would be the first thing that we talk about his Bob has been smeared because he holds these opinions and he's now officially a bad guy And that's being punished for holding those opinions. But now, also, Bob also holds opinion D, which isn't bad. And so it's something that's pretty neutral that most people would say is reasonable. That's how we'll define it. And that's an opinion he happens to share with... Let's get it here. He happens to share with Angela, who... says much less controversial things. But D has been associated with Bob and people like Bob like to make a point D and because they these are the type of people, you know, you can, you know, Tucker Carlson's an example. So Tucker Carlson says something, sometimes he says reasonable things. And when he does, people who hate Tucker Carlson now think that anyone who now says that, oh, wow, you're making you're making, you know, right wing talking points. Oh, you're making Fox News points, right? Or a lot of people don't like Black Lives Matter. Right. And so, you know, they don't like defund the police, but then you get to just general arguments for police reform and people now say, oh yeah, yeah, you're part of that whole woke thing. Right. And actually like you see how very quickly you can lose the ability to talk about so much, so many things because this smears travel. Right. So, so, so, so Bob holds this point and says this point. Yes. Correct. Says this point. You know, this is another point he likes to make. And it gets smeared as well. And meanwhile, that's an opinion he shares with Angela. And now what happens is people start saying because, you know, it's like that opinion itself kind of gets smeared itself. So now anyone who says that is getting associated with this person. And not just that, even other opinions of hers are now considered like the kind of thing said by bad people. Something like that. I think this goes in three. I think the first thing is that I think we just go to opinion D. I think we just here. So I think we're going to now smear from... Do we want our arrows? We care about these arrows anymore. Let's see. Yeah, I think we don't need the arrows, perhaps. Let's just try to smear it up. Let's draw streaks. So I think I did this with some red, some red. And I just basically spilled ketchup and mustard. Wait, no, not that yellow. And I put a hot dog. God damn, where's my normal orange? And then I kind of went like this. What did I do here? I think I went, I think I smudged? I think I smudged maybe. No, that's too much of a smudge. Let's warp this a little bit. Kind of looks like he's breathing fire. Yeah, we'll see how it looks at the end. I mean, this is not gonna be my forte here. It's like something that's actually involved. But anyway, the point is the smear gets all over D, right? I think people get that point. And now, it does look gruesome, doesn't it? But that's the point, is it's gonna be a smear web. Okay, so now what's gonna happen, so... So here we explain that this is Bob and he's smeared, right? But now he holds this opinion and it's shared with Angela and actually because she says it too, and the text does a lot of the work here. It gets, you know, let's add some more colors in here. Because of this, so we go and really is a hot dog. It's like someone spilled their hot dog and now we're all... We're all living with it here. Now we're gonna warp. Oh no.
