answering your questions... in IKEA (ft. @ColtKirwan)

So today we are in IKEA and I thought that it would be a good idea to do a good old Q&A so you guys can get to know me a bit better. So I asked you guys on Instagram to send me your questions and we are going to answer them today. Right here, right now. We're also here to look for a, what would you call it, utility cart? Workbench. Workbench because my gear closet is a mess and so I have... I've been hired to build a little workbench for her. Yeah. Oh, it's similar to, like, this, but with drawers. Ooh, yeah, yeah, yeah, like that. But this one has wheels on it. Yeah, no wheels, and then it would have, like, pull-out drawers. These forks are huge. Look at this thing. Oh, my God. All right, advice for developing your eye. My advice for developing your eye is to watch a lot of movies. Stock up on inspiration. When I was first really getting into... learning about how to film and videography and cinematography. I was consuming a lot of inspiration in the form of like music videos, movies, YouTube videos, not just one medium. So I would say the more you study, the better you will have an instinct when you go to film something. If that makes sense. Jay, you can read this. How did you guys meet and was it awkward the first time you met in real life? You know, I had to sign those DMs. I saw Carissa on Instagram on someone's story and I was like, And we just started DMing back and forth. A couple months into just being Instagram friends, she had planned a trip to New York, not related to me, but we decided to meet up. First time we met, we actually have a clip. I was daily vlogging, so we actually have our first time ever seeing each other in person recorded, which is pretty cool. Yeah, we have both of our POVs. I feel like we're married. I know, right? Oh, where'd you go? We're in Ikea looking for furniture. I know. What the heck? Married life. Married life. Besides content creation, do you have any other big things you want to accomplish? I think that my priority is to pursue YouTube and I don't want to be focusing on like too many things at once. I think that I just want to like go hard at this one thing. So that's where I'm at right now. You have to like sit like a sleepover like this. Does that how girls have sleepovers? Face me, face me, face me. Oh my god, I don't know how sleepovers have so many rules. It's a hoodie line. It's a hoodie line. How did you get over the fear of starting a YouTube channel? You can go first. I think it's just like one of those things that I've just always wanted to do. And it's like an itch. Like are you going to live your life never scratching that itch? I think I'd regret my entire life if I didn't just give it a go. I don't want to regret my life, so. That's why I started YouTube. I think I've always loved YouTube as well. Like, I love watching people create stuff, and it always made me want to create things too. Pair that with, like, I just love cameras, I love filmmaking, so it just seems like the perfect mix between everything. Yeah. I think you just really have to love YouTube for what it is too, not just, like... Yeah. Yeah, I feel like nowadays people are more into, like, how much money you can make off YouTube. But, like, YouTube for me is just, like, a creative expression. Some people write, some people draw. I like making videos, and... I think without that, I'd be kind of lost in life, so. Yeah. That's what YouTube is for me. Yeah, me too. Go us. Go us. This is comfy. It is comfy. I like the bell foods. So we line up. That's how IKEA works. Cole has only ever been to IKEA one time in his life. Apparently, they got some bomb food. They're cute. Dude, Ikea has these high-tech cards. So cool. How do you and Cole balance working and relationship living together? Well, we don't live together. Prisa lives all the way in a different country. Yo, Canada. We're currently long-distance relationships. Yeah, but low-key, it's kind of fire. I mean, the flight is only an hour away. I'm in Toronto. I feel like the best type of long distance because same time zone, it's only an hour flight. We get time to like work on each other's goals and then every time we see each other, it's almost like a vacation. Like I look forward to seeing Frieza versus like maybe if it started that we're always together, it'd be very unproductive. At this point in our life too, we're both working on our careers. It's nice that we can have that balance. And even when we're together now, it's like we try to film stuff. Yeah, we're filming the Q&A. Yeah. We're in the same boat trying to make it on YouTube and we can kind of work towards our goal at the same time. Share that passion together and it's cool. We just FaceTime a lot as well. She'll be editing and be like, hey, you need an editing bud? And she'll just like be there. I'll edit. She'll edit. So it works out. It works out pretty good. What do you think? Have you had this before? Nope. I like them a lot. What got you into YouTube? i always loved youtube i think i was a kid watching youtube you know just like a lot of other people but it looked so fun i just wanted to do it too i was watching a bunch of creators and then i'm just like why not why can't i do that i just gave it a shot and my first videos sucked balls oh my god same but so bad i'd like to think nowadays they're okay pretty good always learning all right yeah actually when i first met you And we started talking about YouTube when we were getting to know each other that first day. I was like, wow, he likes YouTube the way I do. Oh my god, I'm so rude. There's nothing on there. All right, it's time to get what we came here for. Gear closet is a mess. I haven't done anything with it since I moved in. It's just getting out of control. So thank you, kind sir. I'm a passenger princess. What's harder, writing the plot or executing the shots? Definitely writing the plot is a lot harder. Arguably storytelling is the hard part. Getting the shots is the easy part, but I think that if you have a solid plan going into filming a video including story then getting the shots is just very streamlined i'm sorry then getting the shots um becomes very streamlined there's the instructions oh there it is who or what inspires you to make videos ready on three three two one gox art dang i should have said that i've seen it from the same wavelength we both enjoy watching gox's videos dude so good next level yeah he's like the best right now like building your catalog of inspiration is very important and getting it from different places not just one person or not just one medium even movies paintings music videos youtube just experiencing life honestly yeah journaling everything how is it dating a fellow creator you're both awesome by the way no you're awesome i think it's cool i feel like a lot of people say like they don't want their partner to be in the same type of field that they're in but it's super cool like we made YouTube videos together and she helps me film all the time so I think it's really good yeah kiss your filmers guys kiss your filmers guys kiss your filmers I don't know if I'll get that reference figure it out figure it out anyways so far it's our progress you're really working hard I am oh man How long have you been creating videos? You're so good. And how did you learn? So long. Years. Years and years trying to learn how to make videos. You have to make bad videos to make good videos. Yeah. And I have made countless bad videos. A lot of them are not up anymore. I think you should keep them up. No. Cool to look back on. But how long? Maybe like six years. Maybe even more like making videos. Even for myself. Not necessarily freelancing. My first upload was maybe 2000. 17 or something like that and they suck so bad But I like looking at them because then it's kind of shows like how far you've come for creating videos though like on YouTube specifically I started to really learn and understand how to make YouTube videos during The pandemic time so maybe a couple years, but I wasn't posting consistently But I was starting to learn more about storytelling structure studying what creators were doing on the platform and I think that was when I had started my understanding of Making videos my videos sucked up until like a year ago when I started working for creators Then I kind of streamline the process of like oh Understanding why they did certain things and the cool thing about working for creators is like you see their mistakes and you don't have to make them Yeah, but I feel like it's always you're always learning always getting more Knowledge and adding to your skill set. Yes, I lost the tool with a friend, getting coffee, and talk like that. I put googly eyes on my camera so I don't feel like I'm alone. I'm talking to someone, at least. But you should still see the outtakes, like, ugh, it's rough, man. It's rough. Especially in public. God. How did you first connect with the creator friends you know today? I find that when you pursue something that you are passionate about, then like-minded people will find you. True, very true. I feel like a lot of people, they want creator friends, but they don't create, so... I think you need to take that first step in yourself first to do that and then then the friends will come. They'll find you. What was your first impressions of each other? I had a crush on her before she knew that I had a crush on her. Also, when I first saw Kariza, the first thought that came to my head was like, wow, she's small. You are tiny. Oh my gosh. I am tiny. I am five foot zero. Five foot zero. Not much after that. Yeah, not much after that. I was like, oh my gosh, he's exactly how he is, like, in his videos. So I kind of knew your personality through that, but then in person, like... How would you describe it? Like, energetic, right off the bat, friendly. I was like, oh my gosh, he's, like, professional. What? I was, like, a little bit starstruck. No way. A little bit. But I was trying to, you know, I was playing it cool, you know? You know, dating a fan. It can happen, guys. Y'all ever plan on doing some cinematic vlogs of you guys going out and going on dates? Ah. Well, I guess you're gonna have to subscribe to find out. I feel like people criticize when you put, like, relationship stuff online. Or you don't take into account the relationship and, like, what they like to do. And I think for Carissa and I, like, we think making videos is fun. And if we post it online, it's just for, like... us but you guys can get to enjoy it too literally it's like a love language yeah for us yeah i'm just letting the world know how much i love krisa oh gosh look how messy okay we'll be rectified soon what is your advice on dealing with imposter syndrome i think when it comes to imposter syndrome You need to remind yourself of all of your accomplishments that you've done in the past. No one cares as much as you, and so I think that will relieve some of the pressure off. What has worked for me in the past is definitely cataloging nice comments, accomplishments of yours. I think that really helps with imposter syndrome. It happens to all of us. Have you done the Meyer Briggs thing? What did you just say? How do you plan your vlogs? Do you storyboard it or create a shot list? I do both. I generally go in with an idea or a topic. From there, pre-production is key. Filming, especially if you're getting a lot of shots. The more organized, the better. So I'm gonna take this wrench. Perfect. You're doing great. Hold, hold, hold. Boom. I will show you guys the current situation. I don't even want to show you guys, to be honest. There's so many things on the floor. I've been sick of it. How to get cool shots inspiration and where do you get it? Actually, this is a good question for you because of your POV shots. I think in order to get cool shots, you just have to think outside of the box and really, honestly, you just have to try. I feel like a lot of people, like, they just don't try hard enough. Shirt's inconvenient to set up a camera, walk through a door, take it, set it up, close the door, walk through the door again. Yeah. But, like... It's that effort that kind of people are like, whoa! But really, it's just like, I just tried a little harder than just walking through the door once. You know? Also, like, thinking of creative ways that you can use shots to further your story. You can put something in your bag, but how can you make that more interesting? Do you do a POV shot? Do you do a close-up, then a wide shot, then you walk out of the frame? I think just, like, thinking of how you can build the story. and utilizing different shots to support that i think the more inconvenient the more creative yeah we're almost there look at this guy are you considering moving to new york are you reading any books right now i'm currently listening to shoe dog audio book so I'm not reading a button listening to it I totally recommend it what is Colt's favorite cheese mozzarella mozzarella happy 10k by the way thank you recording this video right now you're at what let's check the studio cool good job thank you guys any advice for an upcoming content creator While we're both starting our channels, I would say we're up and coming creators, right? Mm-hmm. How much to go off of, but... I feel like you don't have to chase after the views. You just have to post a video. Focus on good videos and viewer satisfaction. It's not about copying exactly what is working. It's taking all these little things that you like and then combining it all together. And that's how you find your thing. You are the only person that can be you. I think having a niche gives you direction of what to post, but... developing like your style is good too because that's what makes your videos unique compared to everybody else that's making videos on this platform I think that's how you will stand out go you go you okay we did it man that was so easy so easy good job good job to you too well I'm definitely very far from completing my gear closet but this is a good step to getting everything off the floor yay yay Good job.
