Tim Tries to Draw Things - Day 3, Part 2

All right. All right. Let's just make a few things going here. It's Pixelmator, huh? Fuck it. I'm so annoyed at Pixelmator. I'm already just on the edge of my skills here with this thing, and then I don't need these crashes. And the worst part is, if anyone knows how, I mean, the worst part for me is that... Sam Teller, is that the Sam Teller? All right, so the worst part is that if it just would keep the stream going, you know, I could just disappear. It would like show is like frozen for a second or like loading and then I could come back and it could restart, but it ends the stream, which is really bad because So then it fucks everything up. What's up, Sam? Sam, help me here. My asshole thing keeps crashing. Okay. So now we have to get everything back up here. Just take a second here. Oh, I have to go here. There we go. Okay, this has to go back in. I think it's Pixelmator because Pixelmator is the first thing to stop working. The music's still working, you know, and then everything else crashes too. I'm going to have to, this is going to be my swan song with Pixelmator. It's going to be the end for me. I had a good run. I have promoted it to a lot of people, which I feel bad about. Because it is, it doesn't matter how good a software is. If it does this, it is a failure. It is a failure of software. And it's like so many people, maybe it's only Macs, but so many people using Pixelmator are going to be using Macs. Like, come on. It just tells me, because this has been going on for years, it tells me that Pixelmator must not be very well supported anymore or something. Because it's just, come on. Yes, drawing is hard. Oh, it's great. It's great. Great. Help me. So. You are part of why I got the fancy-ass MacBook Pro, and it sounds great, right? Except my stream has crashed now four times in three days. And it doesn't keep the stream going. The stream ends, so I have to start a new stream when I come back on. I can't even just come rejoin that stream. And that makes me angry. Yes, it is hard squared. Get off the stream? What does that mean? How do I get off the stream? Stream is not helping me draw. That's not true. Gray, I want to show you some of the things we've done. We've done like 20 hard drawings in two and a half days. That's better than my normal rate. I'm having fun. You're trying to solve the wrong problem. You're wrong. Gray's wrong. It's fine. Everyone's entitled to be wrong. Oh, my audio is doubling. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm an old man about this. I will never... remember to fix the audio right away. I'll always have to turn the, that's when I put my iOS camera on this thing, I always forget to turn the audio off. I wish it would just save my settings, but it doesn't. Yeah. Okay. So let's, by the way, all the tech I have, people have been asking me, what's your computer? What's your monitor? It's all, it's all gray recommendations. So again, I do blame him for anything going wrong today. Even though I do suspect that it's not my hardware and it's Pixelmator. Because Pixelmator is just pretty crashy. I liked my other streak better. This is kind of... Or maybe the point is that it is the streak weakens, you know? This is a mess, though, this streak. I don't like what I've been doing here. Let's draw some new things here. Let's merge these. The smear travels through the line. Uh-huh. Yeah! Yeah, I know what you're saying about that. You know, I think I'll redraw the lines, because the lines were there, like, all curvy like this, because I was gonna have these arrows. But I'm now ditching the arrows, so I'm gonna redraw those lines. That's a good point. Okay. The D isn't legible, but that's okay, because I'm gonna have just shown it in the drawing right above, and I'm gonna have to be talking about... I'm gonna be talking about D. you know, opinion D in the text right around there. So that should be clear. Sometimes, you know, you take your best crack at what you think you're going to say in the text in that exact moment. I have something, but once you do the drawing, sometimes you want to say something different. And then you realize you need to change something about the drawings later. So you just take your best crack and then you read through it. You see if it seems clear. All right. So here we go. Okay. That's going to be good enough. This is the good enough button. It's enjoyable to witness All right So I think this is I think this is item two is that So we go from here. Okay, so let's let's just redraw these lines once well Okay, so we're just gonna go bang bang Bang and then we are gonna go through here and that's gonna eventually be covered up and so is this All right Um, okay. So now I'm going to put these behind the smears and I'm going to copy these and we're going to replace them over here. Um, okay. All right. And now we're going to, wait a second. Is that right? No, it's more like this. Right. Uh, okay. And now I'm going to get rid of the curly cues. All right. Um, where are these? Oh, here. And then, right. So here's, Image 1. Bob gets smeared for having the wrong opinions. But, let me explain in the text, Bob also has opinion D. That's much more reasonable. Opinion D is something shared by Angela, who shares none of his ABC views. Angela believes DEF, but the common D view leaves her, the smear travels to D. And it infects... Maybe I'll put a little one of these. Oh, too many. Maybe I'll just go like this as well. Let's get one of these out of here. Just to be clear, I might like, I don't know, maybe this goes over here too. No, I'm not going to do that. Let's not confuse things. Okay. No, we haven't done Radio Garden yet. Here's where we are right now. We're only here. Because we spent a long time on Google Street View and then we had a crash. So, you know. Let's just see. Yeah. Okay. So now, let me explain. Oh, so it travels here and it travels here. But it doesn't just affect Angela, who now is getting kind of, you know, people are saying don't follow Angela, don't listen to her podcast and stuff because she's a bad person because she thinks D. And we all know D is bad because Bob says it, right? So now that's the second drawing. Now the third one, and I'm going to say that she holds the DEF, but the third one we're going to show it's going to be the next level, right? It's going to be that now actually it goes beyond just this. If it's in a really bad environment. So D is now radioactive, right? As we see. But now if it really goes, Angela's radioactive, which means EF and Jason are also... so here's where we're going to bring back those friends here um where are they no where are they um ef and jason um there so now i'm going to show how the smear actually can go so far as to infect all of these we're going to have to do some more smear lines so here's a chance here's a time when like you can i could make this very quick right and i could copy one of the smear lines and just double it up triple it up here but I think it's one of those, you have to decide, is it worth it, right? Sometimes you just copy it, right? But I think here it looks a little bit higher quality and more organic if it is just, you know, different. And it doesn't take that long. I can probably do this in a few minutes. So I'm going to actually just spend the time to kind of, you know, draw three more smear lines, even though it's not very fun and I don't really know how to do it. Okay, I'm going to try to get better at this skill, the smear line skill right now, though. Bye. I'm going to try to do this in one go, first of all. And I'm going to try to do this. Put some red throughout, you know, and some orange and some yellow. And then we're going to smear those around. We're going to see if this works. I don't know if it's actually been the right move. Oh, that's it. First of all, it's way too thick. Way too thick. Brush size. Okay, I think that kind of worked. A little yellow heavy there. Let me, uh, okay. And then this one. I feel like these are getting worse as they go, and yet it's okay. You know? Because the point will get across. Why is this one so thin and the other one was so thick? I don't really get it. Okay. Uh, there we go. So he's nice and smeared, and this is the problem. This all none of those deserve the smear except maybe Bob and and really no one deserves a smear This does look a bit odd I mean I do like my first one the best so I could just copy that and do them all but I think it's fine. No, let me move the this lines Something's a little but their first one came out well The other ones are not you know, they're like not blocking the lines as much and they should be consistent I don't know why that first one works so well. Let me just... There we go. Okay. That one's fine. And now let's just add a little more into this one. Okay. Okay. Sorry, I know this is not the most interesting we've done in a second with this. Okay. This is going to have to be good enough now. All right. Cool. So they're all smeared, right? All right, it's a mess. It's a mess, but it's supposed to be a mess. That's the point. A smear is a mess. Everyone's like, wow, that's really messy. And I'm like, yeah, that's the point. Okay. So that's it. And those are the three drawings we need. And then I'll figure out how to actually weave the text around this in order to make it one complete story so that people know what the hell's going on. And again, if it were the blog, I might have done this in five steps or six drawing steps, but here we're going to try to keep it to three. And I might even condense it to two once I see how it looks. Okay, moving on. let's do another drawing and then we will um procrastinate um okay no not the hypothesis um yeah joe rogan totally joe rogan is a classic example of a node that has been smeared mostly because of who he has in this show mostly so that comes to him and now someone who goes on joe rogan is like oh they went on joe rogan they're bad right um and it's that's the kind of thing that like you know mobs do it's not how normal societies are supposed to behave and it's not good for discourse and it's not good for truth and it's not good for any contingent of the country as far as I'm concerned I don't think it's good for anyone except for the you know small groups of kind of militant people who want to shut down speech okay all right all right well let's move on all right next is A shape called, oh, Gabriel's back. To the point where I would consider spending the eight hours one day to just like draw 20 of these type of shapes. Not all like impossible shapes like this. Some are just normal cubes. But kind of more straight lines and more like intricate. And then combining those instead of getting rid of the rest of this. Or like making it much smaller. I don't know. This is good. You're giving me good ideas. It is Escher. Yeah, Escher's cool. Okay. So where are we going here? What's the next drawing? Okay, so we did our sphere web, good. That was another one that was kind of hanging over my head as like something icky because I was picturing having to draw like a radio hose, but I'm happy the way we did it. All right, next. Okay, I think we should take on something big here because I'm looking at things I can like do when I'm tired later tonight and I think that the hardest things left, I can see that there's three things that are hard left and they're kind of all related. Okay, so the first thing is, this is a big one here. So this guy, oh, no, get out of here. So this guy is the golem, okay? This is the, okay. So this is the low rung giant. So if you followed, you know, this was in the series. the concept that this is a human tribe but it's a low-rung tribe so the kind of sphere campaigns i'm talking about they're done by golems there's not bad people usually involved they get there's people they get wrapped up in something bad and and i've been wrapped up in something bad and so have you and we all have right i don't really think this is a story in general about bad people i think it's that there's bad tendencies our primitive minds like to band together into a kind of um a scary kind of group that is that is scary to if you're in the group it's scary because if you say something wrong you'll be kicked out of the group if you're out of the group it's scary because they will try to smear you and ruin your life right because they're people are in mean mode but it's actually that the primitive minds have banded together into uh what i think it was a low-rung tribe um And I have a depiction of it, which is this giant. It's not smart. It's specifically supposed to be dumb and powerful. It's big. It tramps through the society like Godzilla, right? Like King Kong, one of those. And it's stomping on things right now. It's invading institutions. It's invading government. And it's not just one of these. I think there's a few of them going on in the U.S. right now. Golems are on the rise. There's more golems than normal, and that's not good. There's also the high-rung giant. And this is what happens when higher minds kind of band together and create a group of people. It's not that they're nice. It's grown up. You don't identify with ideas. There's no sacred ideas in a high-rung giant. It's a group that looks for truth together. Or they're just hanging out. It's not that everyone's always looking for truth. It's not a scary place to be yourself. And a science academy should ideally be a high-rung giant because that's, high-rung giants are great at finding truth because everyone disagrees and the truth rises to the top, right? And they're much, and they're forgiven. You know, when a high-rung giant, and you're part of a high-rung giant, you do something bad, even if you do something really bad, you know, usually you're forgiven. You know, you can say, I fucked up and you're moved on. But a golem will try to, they will smear you and you are bad forever. They'll find something you tweeted 10 years ago. and say, boom, there's the smear. We found it. This person's ruined now. That's not how grown-ups behave. That's shitty. That is how mean mobs behave and mean people and children. And that's on the rise. There's a lot of grown-ups acting like mean children right now. And I think it's because this kind of thing has gone viral, columnist, probably through social media and other things. So what we need to do here is we need to... We need to draw a high-rung giant. Because I have a good low-rung giant. He's a big part of the book. But the high-rung giant, I don't have... I'll show you what I have currently. Where are we here? So I think it's came into... I think it's in Chapter 8. Let's just... Story of Us. Okay. So I think it's in Chapter 8. But let's see. Oh, there's Loaf. I went for something here. It was trying to really combine three concepts together, and I think it was just confusing for too many people, so I nixed it from the book. But a lot of this made the book. Okay, yeah, this is the high-rung giant. It's like little people, right? That's not what I wanted to do. It just looks like a stick figure, and I think we can do better, right? It's like this. These are both kind of high-rung giants, right? I just think... if we're gonna have such a non-human looking like weird character for the low-rung giant let's do a high-rung giant as well um okay where are we going here okay we're going back here so the high-rung giant i'm calling a genie all right um because i'm picturing it being like looking a little like a genie and you know uh And a genie is kind of ethereal and like it's magical, right? And a golem is like, if you look at it, here's what a golem is in literature. Golem. It's like a really big, dumb, yeah, see? It's like, this is a golem, right? And that's what I think a low-rung giant, we form a giant one of these really big, dumb, you know, scary dudes, right? And so that's depicted by me as... as this orange guy, right? And so that's what the low-rung giant is, right? It's not smart. It's not nice. It's not kind. It's not nuanced. It's not knowledgeable. It's just powerful and scary. It gets its power from fear. It makes people scared of it. And that's why mobs work out of fear. If people weren't scared of mobs, they wouldn't work. So the high-rung giant is... What do genies look like again? Let's see. um okay there's obviously aladdin but like i don't want it to actually look like an actual aladdin genie as much as this is when people are you know high rung they they're they're they have form a higher emergence creature which is you know super intelligent so i want to have like a big head maybe and uh but maybe like maybe it drifts up from a group that is in an idea lab maybe you know There's kind of this like strand that drifts up from it and forms this higher thing. But importantly also, on an even higher scale, when you have multiple golems, they fight. They fight. They hate each other. They become us versus them. But genies, you can continue to scale up and unite. So two different science academies, you know, they might come, you know, two different science labs might come to two different disagreements, right? They're two genies, right? But the genies don't. fight each other. They work together because they now disagree with each other, which helps each other find truth. So they form an even bigger genie. And this just keeps scaling up. You keep going up, up, up to bigger and bigger groups. And you just have bigger and bigger, you know, single genie. Versus golems, you just have this balkanized war of golems against each other. They don't meld together. So that's part of the idea. And so I need to draw this genie. And it's a pretty big part of the book. It's the only remaining, like, actual big character. left to be drawn so i want to do that now um yeah will smith um um okay so um let's see let's see all right so this guy we're going to put up here just for reference to remember the size and kind of the vibe because this is his counterpart there all right and this i'm just going to leave for reference for anyone who's watching um so that someone comes on they can know what i'm working on let's just this is none of this stuff is going to be in the actual drawing okay space this is really messy those are really thin arrows whatever all right now um yeah this is the hardest thing is designing new characters and it's like any part of drawing i hate it because i'm not good at it when i you know you know i first tried to draw the instant gratification monkey let me actually show you quickly because i'm sure some of you have either read the procrastination post or seen my ted talk and i'm going to show you how it started let's just pull this open for a second uh all right so we've got procrastination folder all right here it is drawings um did i where is this hmm where would i put this uh um let's see i want to show you this i want to show you how the monkey started the panic monster on the other hand that was the first draft that um i don't know where this is i had a uh oh you know what i might have um i might have posted it um okay i don't know but i can find something else let me look well here here i'm gonna open the original okay well um okay well this was a big bummer It's like I could look for it forever. I just don't remember where I put it. I had my sketches from the original Winston Gratification Monkey and they look ridiculous. And I think I tweeted it once, but I don't know where to find that. It's going to be way, way back. Anyway, point is that these things are not easy for me. And I start by doing lots of sketches and trying to get it right. So here, this one. even this one seems easy but it was it was not like it took me a while to get it how i wanted to look so let's go to um primitive mine plush really great idea i'm at your email about day three of the live stream typical didn't include a link yeah that is that is typical should i send one out now is it too much let's see what is alicia thing should i resend the email um We'll see what Alicia thinks about that. We want genies. I don't want people to be like, ugh, I don't want to make one of those, right? Like, maybe it's just like a big head, you know? I don't want it to look like an idiot. I don't know if I want to make it, because the problem is if you make it like weird lines, like weird edges, it actually becomes really hard to like work with. If I want to do like a profile of one, if I want to have one like merging, it's like, it's kind of a nightmare to keep doing, you know? So I want to be careful with, I don't want to... fuck myself later um i mean i could put some behind it like it has to be blue green um you know maybe that's like maybe it's something like that um maybe it's like just a circle like that um and maybe it's a circle with a face and then below it is some other coming down i don't think that same brush so what i should remember what brush i just used the stranded brush okay I guess I could try a few things if this is going to potentially be what I do here. Let's just see. Addition a few things here. Over. I think it shouldn't be so solid. And that looks too much like a paintbrush. Sponge brush. No. God. All right. Varnish. So far, the first guy is still the winner. Scattered. No. Nope. A spray is interesting, although it looks like a spray. I don't think we want a spray, right? Okay, so those are our brushes. You never know what these things look like big. Sometimes it just looks... Oh, God. Definitely not. It's kind of cool, though. That's weird. Okay. Okay, and inks. I don't think we're gonna want any ink. Although, you know, you never know. Sometimes, like, one of these things big actually looks kind of good, even though it's not meant for this purpose. 300. All right, so, no, God, no. All right. Pens, I have a doubt we're gonna have any kind of luck with pens, but let's just try, actually. That's a, oh, crayons. Crayons could be good. Here, let's just try a few of these. No, definitely not. Graphite. I want it to be, like, ethereal, you know? So, like, I don't think these are going to be two that actually look like crayons, and that's the problem. Oil pastel. All right. That's not awful. Oil pastel. But it's just not ethereal. You're not going to be able to see the edges. Pencils. Why would a pencil be good, right? Let's just see what a big pencil looks like. It's going to look bad. No, it looks bad. And then we're back to basic. Okay. Now, between these, I am feeling, I think, the watercolor. Because I think the other one is too... I don't know. It just looks a little, like, flimsy. It's not like as much... I don't know. It looks like an orb. I get it. But, like, let's just mess around with that one one more time. So that one, it was the... Where did I start here? That was the Stranded Brush. Right? Did I try the Filbert? Let's just try the Filbert quickly. It's not... No. All right, so let's go back to the stand, the stranded brush. All right. No, I'm leaning towards watercolor, but I want to give the stranded one more try here. Let's make it a little thicker. Well, because it does kind of, you know, you can picture it's like, it's kind of like it forms, like it's kind of like a swirling thing forms up from the people. So what if I, let's just see something now. What if I did? Never come back to our normal thing and I think it's you know, it's a way-but-why character, right? So it's still silly It's not doesn't have to be like actually that serious which means I can still have a silly face. I think Let's see so Has to be very neutral. No smiling at all. Just like the golem Really that really kills its gravitas that face doesn't it? Maybe we can do better. Maybe we can do better than that face Let's see. Maybe the face is in a similar color. Maybe. Maybe the face is in this color. Darker. And maybe it's faded. But he just kind of looks like Oscar the Grouch. Not really what I was going for. Is there a chance he doesn't need a face? Or maybe he just has eyes. It's the mouth that's so undignified. Let's try using a brush. Let's try using the same watercolors. Let's just save this as a favorite. So, maybe we try combining. We use the other one, the stranded. Let's save this as a favorite as well. Okay, stranded 80. So, I mean, I don't want it to be a ghost. The mouth is not, now it's a ghost. Maybe it's just, maybe it doesn't need eyes. But it's a character. So it's just going to come down from a group of people down here. And this thing is going to emerge up from them, right? I think it needs to have a face. Maybe it doesn't need to be so serious. Maybe it's just a silly way, but why face? Because, like, it's still a product of people, right? It's not like... I do like the watercolor head. I think it works well. Let's see. That. I think if we can do a face... Doing an ethereal, mystical face with the stupid just two eyes and a straight mouth doesn't really look good. I think if it's going to be a stupid face, it should just have a stupid basic brush. Maybe he's got a little smile, but it's not really supposed to be. It's just very, um, okay, what if, what if, now is it the cloud guy from Mario now? I don't want, I don't want that. Um, okay, let's just mess around with this a little bit. So let's get rid of this. let's get rid of this and these um okay so okay for reference let's actually bring him down now and make him more of his normal size right so we got this dude being big and dumb all right and now what we've got is we want to be about the same size right and so i like that the head's bigger because he's like dumb with his little head and it's like big right but then and then it's gonna be Now we need some other kind of, I think a different kind of brush. Let's try something. Okay, let's go back to this green. Okay, so what if we went like green? Yeah, let's just first put this button. So we go like, well, hold on a second, actually. So what if I went like, how does it emerge? How does a genie thing emerge? It comes like this, like that kind of, right? Curvy lines are hard. I don't think it should be small. Maybe it's much smaller. Okay, let's run with this for a second. Now, here's my idea. First of all, let's change this color. Okay, and now make another one, and then make a third one. Oh, shit. Five-minute warning for Wordle. Okay, we'll have to come back to this. I won't be able to finish it before Wordle, but... Okay, and now my idea was to... Wait, shit. Why is it not letting me do this? So now I would... I think this whole thing needs to be angled a little differently. And then it needs to all be... Why? Why would it do that? merge this just as an experiment. Why is it making that other thing? Okay. So I wanted to like, I'm going to fade it, but I don't know why I can just do this separately, I guess. Okay. So we can fix this a little bit, obviously. It has to be cleaned up, but I don't like those changes. All right, well, I'm going to make it, I want it to be much more faded. And maybe the whole thing is just too big. And maybe it curls down a couple more times. And maybe you have to just smudge this all a little bit. It's a little like, you know, maybe it's a little... So let's just duplicate and see what it would look like if I, you know, give it some of the warping, warp some of the colors together. So... You know. Well, we've done a thing. I mean dark colors look better, but it's not really going for dark here. It's like, but it's almost like rather have dark colors that pop than bright colors that aren't bright. That's funny. I mean everything's better than, like, green. Yellow. Maybe we just go deep green, you know? Um, the other option is just to go very faint. You know, like, make it even more faint. Like, it's just too green. Uh, well, we're getting somewhere, at least. I do feel like the general idea is good. I might be leaning more towards Jellyfish Guy. I don't know. I don't want the other guy to look furry, you know? I think I need some more, just to mess with some more effects on this. What effects options do I've got? Nope. none of that um yeah i mean another option is to kind of give him a glow like a 3d glow looking thing let's see if that looks a little more of like a but now he really looks like a jellyfish make him look at him a little more i could you know something like he looks like a bubble i don't know about that looks kind of cool but he looks a little bit like a bubble as opposed to like kind of uh i don't know ah it's hard it's hard you don't know how to do a skill. Very sad. And the thing I can do is I can make him like, you know, profile like this. It's easy to mess with his. So as someone who you can tell is not very good at this, at doing it quickly or like knowing how to work with it very well, what I would do is I designed this intentionally. One of the things I had in mind was I can just, he's looking to the left now, right? Or even, you know. even get rid of that eye you know and have him looking fully to the left right but the bottom part can always stay how it is um you know i can have him sad i don't know if i'm even gonna want to but um it's just easy for me to now manipulate this guy into different positions without having to reinvent the wheel um yeah rays of light the problem is rays of light just look very um they look I mean, I have some rays of light. You see, this is what, like, look, look, this looks like rays of light coming off his thing, right? His, like, thing here, you can see. You can see this is, like, very, you know, rays of light coming off of him, right? But, womp, womp. I wonder if the answer is to try to just go deeper. Let me just try to go darker color and get rid of, like, the... But then he's just kind of like a dark green genie, which is, I guess, okay. It's not really what I was going for, but... The other option is just to go like this and really wash it out and just give up on, you know, give up on, like, color and just go for kind of, like, light and almost, like, airy. You know, like, no, that's not working at all. What do I need to go thicker? What if I went thicker? You know, a little, like, give him a little bit of dimension, maybe? But I would put that behind his mouth. Where is his stupid mouth? Here we go. And maybe I would make it a little different color. Versus this. Ah. Torture. Self-torture. Because now he's just green, but here he'd be, like, a little bit... Oof. Shouldn't do that. Don't do it. Um. Those circles are gonna come out just kind of like I don't know if it'll look ethereal I think it'll just be like these light gray circles around him. I'm not sure about that, but it does accomplish something And though, you know Maybe this one this is this one's white, you know a little more mystical Gives him a little more light. I don't know I don't know if this makes it better or worse. Here's none of this. And here's all this glow. Wait, the watercolor? Yeah. The RGB version, I'm just gonna, like, do a different version. Supposed to be this like floating orb of like this kind of floating orb of essence of something versus like you know. I want to try one other thing that came to mind. one here faded a little smaller now i duplicate it again and i make it a little bigger and i fade it even more so you see it's a little more of like uh if i if i group these so here's what i just added i went from this to that give them a little glow um i feel like now this circle oh that circle could grow a little bit Man, I'm not labeling these layers. I'm begging for, like, just misery later, but... So... Am I... Am I... I might be making everything worse. All right, so this is what I just did. Um... Oh. What the hell? Oh. All right, this. All right, so this is where it was. It was here. And now what I've done is I've made a bigger circle and... Oh. And I've added to his head. Just merge it all. That's not a good suggestion. This is what happens when you take away the good enough button is I just will do this for hours trying to figure out what I like most and I won't even remember what I liked or disliked. Maybe I'm kind of thinking we should go with this deeper green. That line on the edge has to be dealt with. At some point you do have to just say, this is going to have to do. I don't know. The deeper green, it's not what I was going for, right? We wanted, like, with the guy on the left, we wanted, like, you know, beautiful, bright, like, turquoise-y, magical. But if we're not gonna get that, then deeper might be better. I mean, it's not very bright, but, um, my, uh, here's my thing. This gradient could be, this could be deeper green. Move this guy into here. Okay, we're going to move on in a minute. I'm not going to do this part all night. And maybe I need to chill out on the white part here so it blends a little better. Here's my white circle. Now let me... Look at all these hideous layers. This is crazy. All right, now I'm going to try to... No. I think I need to cut this part out of it. Whoa. Why? Supposed to meet people there and have all kinds of arguments. And there's genie forums you never knew existed. And you go into class. And there's a debate in class. And there's a genie. And then there's these papers being written by professors. And there's disagreements. And there's a genie, right? And it's supposed to be this big genie coming out of a college campus. Someone who maybe grew up in a Gollum-type environment, like I did, you know, where everyone was one political stripe where I grew up. You go to college, you're supposed to have your mind challenged. And I really did. I feel very fortunate. And you're supposed to be, like, introduced to the concept of genies. And, oh, my God. And you come out, and everyone comes out of that environment, and they're such a better thinker forever because they spent four years in genieland. What's happening now is the opposite, is that a very small militant group ideology has basically made it illegal to be genie it's it's eradicated genies from college campuses and you know not every i'm sure there's little groups of friends where they but in general and it's awful and it's terrible regardless of what you think politically you should be very annoyed about the concept of colleges becoming low-rung um in low-rung training centers they train people to be more low-rung than when they came in they train people um that that good people already we already have the truth and and this is the truth and anyone who disagrees is an awful person and um they teach kids that and the kids don't they don't get to benefit from all the genie time they could be spending but they also are actually being taught um to be in a golem they're they're being they're being trained to be part of a golem they're being trained as soldiers in a golem and it's really sad and infuriating makes me angry and um and i don't think i i don't i think part of the the reason that this has been able to happen is because we don't have this language i think i that's what i'm trying to write a book that can help with language that can help us see that for what it is you know so that's what i feel um okay okay anyway i i have a huge amount of the book a huge chunk of the book huge chapter gets into that All right. Now, here we go. So, okay, so... We have this, this emergence tower is a big part of the book and a big part of the series. So here is, so here's an emergence tower, right? So each one of these atoms, a bunch of atoms together form a molecule that has, that is more than the sum of its parts, right? It has its own capabilities and a bunch of molecules form protein, but even more so just a bunch of atoms form a cell. that has way more capabilities than all the atoms combined individually. And the cells together form an animal that is more than the sum of its parts. And then we can extend this upwards. An animal, a bunch of animals forms, could be a tribe, could be a country, could be a lot of things. And this is the origin of the concept of a golem and a genie, because my point is that... humans don't just form like a wolf wolves always form a wolf pack that's it which is a golem it's a wolf golem it's a scary you know and humans can do that humans can form just like a scary thing that's the golem but they also can form a genie right so this is they can when they're higher when their higher minds are the ones really in charge they form a totally different higher emergence creature what i'm trying to show here and i just want to like there's one drawing here we also made some huge emergence tower which i thought was kind of cool where is it that's not it oh yeah is it this right but we've made an even bigger one oh yeah this one so check it out right so this is like the full one right you know it's like a species goes to a biosphere which eventually you know community because eventually potentially so biosphere is the all life on earth but like maybe it's part of a cosmic sphere maybe it's part of a multiverse sphere that's just me being silly basically but it's kind of fun to think about um I'm not going to, that's the kind of thing, it's just too vertical to be in the book. You've got an echo chamber of people in strict agreement, you know, kind of enforced conformity by their culture. the group's culture which yields one of these as the group in a higher emergence way is actually this and a bunch of these together is just a bunch of fighting different things while this one here is going to yield a genie and a bunch of genies is going to yield a super one super genie you know so it's the idea here to show it's not just better for the people in the group to be in an idea lab It's not just that they make something smarter, but actually in a mass scale, it scales up to something super smart versus something that's just actually like, could be war, could be civil war, genocide, could be just a lot of political infighting, but this is where ugliness happens. Maybe, maybe even just a day for a book. Well, it's a book, right? It's an hand illustrated book. So if there's a hundred drawings in the book, there's actually more, but a lot of them are combined. If there's a hundred like original new things in the book. and I'm doing six a day. That's a little over two weeks. And it's like, well, if someone's like, oh, you've got a, you're hand illustrating this book. And I'm like, yeah, it was like, it took like the second half of, you know, April or whatever. It's like, oh, it's like it compiles. And I think that goes for a lot of work where it seems like this is a nightmare. And it's like, oh my God, no. But if you actually just like, well, if you just plow ahead for... Couple weeks then it's done and then it's something that like when you look at the big picture It's like well that that should have taken a couple weeks. It's not a big deal That's I think that's like sometimes it feels like things are daunting On like a micro scale when you look at each item, but then when you actually take a step back, it's not such a big deal Alright, so here we are. That's where I just hang out when I'm not posting something. so twitter is just like a place to follow what i'm thinking about that day and i test a lot of ideas on twitter like when i was you know like a lot of these ideas uh originally when i was writing them or i had a chart or a diagram or an idea i just throw it on twitter let's you know low cost um sometimes people didn't get it or they were confused or they misinterpreted it or they were they hated it in a way that like i i didn't anticipate and other times it totally resonated you know when viral and that's huge information for me so it's like a place i can throw something against the wall and see if it sticks um and so that's my daily kind of expression platform and then i mean instagram a little too but i usually just put kind of like the best of twitter onto instagram or things that i think would be good as instagrams and then email email is somewhere where anytime there's something big happening send that email the subscription list um is You can just see that on the side of Waipa Wines there somewhere. Okay. Last drawing. It's going to have to do a lot with these angry golems. It's me helping to use an image, a visual, to help tell the story of what happened to U.S. politics in the last 50 years, 60 years. So in the middle of the century, it's not that everyone liked each other or they were more mature or anything. It's that I think that the tribalism was distributed along the emergence tower. What I mean by that is there was people who were really focused on their local politics, and that's what they cared about. There was people who were obsessed with the state politics, like the Republicans versus Democrats in Iowa. Might have had nothing to do with what the Republicans and Democrats are like nationally, because it didn't used to be so clean cut. So people were just really into their state politics, right? then there were some people really into the national politics the presidential race and whatever and then there was people who were super patriotic and super anti-soviet union and you know focusing hard on um on america versus this right and so you had these different levels of tribalism and each one kind of helps unify the others if everyone is angry at the soviet union that helps people chill out about their national politics and be more united if people are angry at each other within the republican party that helps you know them unite with some democrats maybe nationally in the national races and so you don't have uh it so it was kind of distributed which simmered simmered things and what happened since then is you lost kind of the the international thing because the soviet union you know the threat of it went down as far for the us there isn't you know hasn't been like a big international enemy for a while You had World War II, and then you had the Cold War, but after that. And then within the parties, you had the conservatives all went from the Democrats that were there. They all went to the Republicans, and all the progressives that were in the Republican Party went to the Democrats. For a lot of reasons I discuss in the book, you ended up with much more kind of, not much fighting within the parties, nearly as much as you had the two parties as the two. So all of this tribalism, these different tiers, they all kind of melted away except for this national one. right versus left and that became this giant whirlpool that sucked out started to suck everything else in it got so and so it's what we have the problem we have now is just everyone's tribalism is concentrated together into one tier and so you have this giant tribal war suddenly with nothing above it or below it to simmer things so i'm trying to depict that here using these angry golems as the concept okay now just trying to think about the way i want to arrange all this uh frederick i've been there i i'm always i'm like procrastinating and like being furious at myself while watching something else and i'm like well they're not procrastinating so i'm sitting here hanging out with them but then i feel like that all the time um it's not a good feeling but also you know you know a lot of people just gotta procrastinate sometimes um if it makes you feel better after this i'm definitely gonna like have at least three days of doing absolute shit i'm gonna try i'm definitely gonna sit down tomorrow and try and just like Expect very little from me tomorrow. Okay, so I'm just gonna make a doc. Oh, it's a visit from Gus. It's a visit from Gus. It's Gus. He's very excited. He's excited to be Gus. He's excited to be alive and to be Gus. He enjoys his life. He has a lot of zest for life. All right, all right, all right. Oh, I haven't Lion Kinged in today. Elizabeth, that is a great call. That is a great call. I'm super happy you reminded me. I could do it with her, but it's just not as fun. Say she's too big. It doesn't have the same effect. I mean, it's funny. She's hilarious. She's not very nice. She's not very warm. You have to really earn a cuddle from her. Gus is just, he'll just give you affection all day. I'm really happy you reminded me, Elizabeth. That was like one of the last things we had to make sure we did today. All right. So I'm going to label this. We're going to call this concentrated, distributed to concentrated. Hmm. Ugh. I'm going to have to recolor some of these. It really made this difficult because I just didn't consider I was going to have to recolor these. And so when I first did them, I didn't do layers very well, but that's okay. Shouldn't take too long. All right. So we're going to have... I'm going to show three tiers of tribalism. So we're going to have... Now the question is, do you want to do it vertically? Well, we'll think about that in a second. Okay. So we're going to have... Within the party... factions within the party, right? All yelling at each other. And now, maybe we'll go for some lo-fi. Let's go back to the OG playlist that we had going here. We've done a lot of Zelda now. Get some chill vibes here for the end of our little sesh. So we've got national politics here. Republicans versus Democrats. We've got... What we're going to have is two groups here. We're going to show factions within the Democrats fighting and factions within the Republicans fighting. And then we're going to show this faction. And then up here, we're going to have just one big... This is the U.S. We're focusing on the U.S. here. And this is going to be a U.S., say, flagged, colored guy who's going to be fighting, you know, I guess the Soviets. I don't know if I'll have a Soviet guy or a... Yeah, I think I think that'll and then and the question is Yeah, epidemic sound if you just search for happy hip-hop you get a great selection of like five it's a great list of like 500 songs so Maybe I can get away with leaving these guys in these four colors that would be sick and just being like yeah These are factions of the party as opposed to guys gonna do like Dark blue and lighter blue and lighter blue and like four blues and four reds, which it would get the point across a little better, but Might be kind of nice to not have to do that, you know? Okay, now how the hell do I do a US flag? Okay, I think I can do something here to the top Let me try something my magic eraser. This could work. This is a drawing from the series that did not make the book but I think it's pretty interesting. Okay. More efficient way to do this, but I don't feel like figuring it out at the moment. He is American. National guy. I think that was the hard one. I think everything else should be. There's definitely a clipping mask feature that at some point Alicia tried to teach me and what I needed here to make this much quicker. You can just have something and put something behind it like that. Now. You know, I'm definitely into an audiobook. I mean, obviously, you got to do an audiobook, and I love listening to audiobooks. The only thing that sucks is so many images, right? Like, forget the bushy genie versus the bald genie. You get no genie now, right? You just have me describing it. Loses a lot, you know, this book more than others. Loses a lot with the audio, but I still think you got to do it, obviously. And I'll try to, I'm going to rewrite a lot of sections. Not fully rewrite, but just... add descriptions in where drawings were to try to make it as um as good an experience as possible close as close as possible day two where does it say oh day two yeah yeah sorry yeah because i just used that same duck now we've got this we've got this and now the question is i think i guess we should have i guess we should have um now that i made this dude i might as well use it i needed this before so That's the thing now You gotta make I didn't have the I Should have the little at least on the big guy. So now what we're doing is... We're showing two things. How it was in the 60s and how it is today. Really like by the 90s. I think this is going to be better horizontally. So we're going to have to accept the Emergence Tower loss here and not have it next to it because it's just going to be better to show two things. We've got this. We've got this. We need to make everything smaller. national guy we've got international guy we've got national friends here and then we've got then we've got inter party intra party politics cool and now that's 1960 oh yeah internet had a huge huge factor played a huge role um a lot of things a lot of things that you know aren't really like people being it's not really bad people that much here in this story it's just kind of like bad circumstances that have environmental changes that have brought out the worst um this is this music's a bit odd anyway all right so now what we're gonna see here though is this is shrunk and also faded this guy is shrunk and faded And this is all there is. Now, pretty clearly, this is the Wait But Y font that I drew with my hand. And it was awful. And I was going like this the whole time. Because it was just, like, so tense. Yeah, the internet's weird. Yeah, parties. Yeah, I'm glad you like it. I feel like this came out the way I wanted it to. I was totally, you know, see? I was totally going to stop after that last one. This one here. I was like, ugh. Because we drew the genie. And we made this. And I was like, this is... These two were together grouped this as like these two really big icky things. And I had to draw the genie to do it. And I was definitely going to just quit. Probably before even this. But because you're all here, I was like, you know what? We're here. Fuck it. Let's just power through. And now, done. And like, it took forever. This actually was a nightmare. as it turns out with all the coloring and stuff. But it's done. It's just like you get it right once and now it's done and it's over. And by the way, this is only half the story because then I go into explain what happened between 1995 and today. So we concentrated tribalism then turns into something even worse. Hypercharged tribalism, I call it, which is the same idea, but it becomes like a religious fervor. And I think the Internet is... the reason for that and so that's kind of the best a big part of the backstory i'm telling in this book to try to explain how things got the way they are um so yeah all right think yeah radioactive yeah i have a bunch of potential names for it but uh went with hypercharged i had religious tribalism but that's like too confusing because people can think i'm talking about actual religion um but it's a lot of like micro decisions you know you have to do in these situations about what's the term for everything what are you doing and it's not you know nothing's perfect you just have to kind of give it a go and uh all right yeah contagious smear right six degrees it's a lot like that i'm really glad you guys were here because you saw a lot of uh the big ideas that i've been working on um and a nice you know there's a way to actually showcase some of the ideas as well as some of the new drawings as well as hang out with a bunch of people who I like. I always like hanging out with people who like the blog. It's just, that makes sense. People who don't like the blog are probably less likely to be people I want to hang out with because they don't have my interests and my sense of humor. And so it's always, it's a nice way to filter people that are fun to hang out with. And this was an awesome experiment. A few crashes, but I think that's Pixelmator's fault. I got familiar with a very new medium now that I hope to use a lot. And if you have ideas, as I said, let me know. But thank you, huge thank you to everyone who came. This is, it made it an awesome time for me. And I hope you had fun too. Yes, Wake Baha'i is so needed. This is reminding me of why it's so needed.
